Wildfire impacts on stream sedimentation: re-visiting the Boulder Creek Burn in Little Granite Creek, Wyoming, USA
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this study of a burned watershed in northwestern Wyoming, USA, sedimentation impacts following a moderately-sized fire (Boulder Creek burn, 2000) were evaluated against sediment loads estimated for the period prior to burning. Early observations of suspended sediment yield showed substantially elevated loads (5×) the first year post-fire (2001), followed by less elevated loads in 2002 and 2003, signalling a return to baseline values by 3 years post-fire. However, more recent work (8 years post-fire) has shown elevated suspended sediment yields that are more than double those predicted for the pre-burn range of flows. We tentatively attribute this increase to channel destabilization in the burned area due to the introduction of large wood from burned riparian zones and hillslopes. These results provide insight into the longer-term geomorphic impacts of wildfire that are associated with channel and bank instability in a burned riparian environment due, in part, to large wood dynamics.

Modified Interactions between Salamander Life Stages Caused by Wildfire-induced Sedimentation
A 1993 wildfire and subsequent landslides modified many streams in the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California (USA). Prior to the fire at Cold Creek Canyon, adult California newts (Taricha torosa) frequently preyed on conspecific eggs and larvae. Post-fire landslides increased the number of stream pools containing terrestrial earthworms. Earthworms were more common in adult newt diets af...
متن کاملSnowpack-Runoff Relationships for Mid-Elevation Snowpacks on the Workman Creek Watersheds of Central Arizona
Snowpacks in the southwestern United States melt intermittently throughout the winter. At some mid-elevation locations, between 7,000 and 7,500 ft, snowpacks appear and disappear, depending on the distribution of storms during relatively dry winters. Some winter precipitation can occur as rain during warm storms and is not reflected in the snow course data. The USDA Natural Resources Conservati...

Wine-Spring Creek basin, in the mountains of North Carolina’s Nantahala National Forest, is an ecosystem management demonstration site, iu which ecological concepts for management and restoration are tested. Large woody debris (LWD) is an important link between streams and the adjacent riparian forest, but evidence for the connection between LWD and trout in southern Appalachian streams is limi...
متن کامل1 Is the Muddy Creek Food Web Affected by Coalbed Natural Gas Inputs ?
The Muddy Creek watershed is a unique ecosystem because the stream contains a distinctive fish assemblage, is physically degraded, and will soon be influenced by oil and gas development. Separating the effects of multiple stressors can be challenging; however, having prior data can be very useful in determining the influence of different stressors. In our study, we attempted to separate the eff...

The Goshen Swamp, a fourth order blackwater creek in southeastern North Carolina, was clearcut of 130 acres of riparian and seasonally flooded forest in late May through September 1998. Downstream water quality had been monitored monthly for 212 years before the clearcut, during the clearcut, and for two years following the clearcut. The objective of this paper was to test the hypothesis that c...
