The Spatial Variation and Routine Sampling of Spawning Gravels in Small Coastal Streams
نویسنده
چکیده
The size distribution of the sediments in the bed of a stream channel is a significant characteristic of fish habitat. Spawning gravels are sampled during habitat assessments and monitoring programs. Within a given stream, effective, representative sampling requires a clear understanding of the spatial variation of spawning gravel characteristics. This study documents and explains the spatial variation of spawning gravels in two streams on the Queen Charlotte Islands. In many respects these are representative of the small, coastal watersheds of British Columbia. An oversized McNeil sampler was used to collect representative subsurface samples at 29 spawning sites. Surface material was characterized at 35 sites using Wolman counts, and an expedient photographic technique provided limited surface information at 116 sites. Detailed sediment sampling, magnetic tracer stones, and scour chains were used to study the impact of log jams on grain size. Strong hillslope-channel interactions and an abundance of large organic debris preclude the development of simple grain-size trends. Two fisheries indices of gravel texture, the Fredle Index and percent finer than 3.36 mm (64.0 mm truncation), do not differ significantly between spawning sites. In contrast, surface median size and percent finer than 0.85 mm (64.0 mm truncation) differ significantly and stochastically between sites. A sampling strategy, which aims to establish the general fisheries value of the bed material in a given stream, is then proposed. Number of samples, site selection, sample size, and mode of collection are specified in view of practical field considerations. This is regarded as an improvement on existing sampling methodologies. An issue of pressing concern, and one which hinders the development of effective field sampling, is the poor understanding of the relationships among fish survival, gravel quality indices, and sample truncation limits.

Sediment Transport and Resulting Deposition in Spawning Gravels, North Coastal California
Incubating salmonid eggs in streambeds are often threatened by deposition of fine sediment within the gravel. To relate sedimentation of spawning gravel beds to sediment transport, infiltration of fine sediment (<2 mm in diameter) into clean gravel beds, bed material size distributions, scour-fill depths, and sediment transport during 10 storm flow events were measured in three streams of north...
متن کاملEulachon Embryonic Egg and Larval Outdrift Sampling Manual for Ocean and River Surveys
The anadromous eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) spawns in the lower reaches of coastal rivers and streams from northern California to Alaska. Although the distribution and timing in some rivers is well known, the occurrence in other rivers is uncertain or unknown. The presence of larval eulachon in estuaries and marine waters adjacent to rivers is a strong indication that a river is used by eu...
متن کاملEffects of Salmon-Derived Nutrients and Habitat Characteristics on Population Densities of Stream-Resident Sculpins
Movement of nutrients across ecosystem boundaries can have important effects on food webs and population dynamics. An example from the North Pacific Rim is the connection between productive marine ecosystems and freshwaters driven by annual spawning migrations of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp). While a growing body of research has highlighted the importance of both pulsed nutrient subsidies ...
متن کاملEffects of Gravel Augmentation on Macroinvertebrate Assemblages in a Regulated California River
Enhancement projects within anadromous salmonid rivers of California have increased in recent years. Much of this work is intended as mitigation in regulated streams where salmon and steelhead spawning habitat is inaccessible or degraded due to dams, water diversions and channelization. Little research has been done to assess the benefits of spawning habitat enhancement to stream organisms othe...
متن کاملGrowth, mortality and spawning season of the spangled emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus Forsskal, 1775) in coastal waters of Hormozgan Province in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
The population parameters and spawning season of the Spangeld emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus) were studied in coastal waters of Hormouzgan province. The monthly calculated mean values of gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females were indicate to increase from February, reach the highest in March and decline in June. The spawning season peak of L. nebulosus occurred in March. The Von Bertalanffy grow...
