Visualization of compressibility effects on large-scale structures in compressible mixing layers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Vorticity, x; velocity divergence, r u ~; and the magnitude of pressure gradient, rp j j are visualized in a same flow domain, to reveal large-scale, dilatation and shocklet structures in a compressible mixing layer from direct numerical simulation results. We simulated 2-dimensional (2-D) and 3-dimensional (3-D) compressible mixing layers with a third-order Discontinuous Galerkin method (Cockburn and Shu 1998) and a third order explicit Runge–Kutta time advancement scheme. The grid numbers are 5:04 10 for 2-D cases, and 4:6 10 for 3-D case. The resulting variants are normalized with the density q; the speed of sound a and qa of the free streams. A perturbation signal with a broadband spectrum and a peak at the most unstable frequency in incompressible case, in conjunction with a hyperbolic tangent mean velocity profile are imposed Fig. 1 Vorticity, x; velocity divergence, r u ~; and the magnitude of pressure gradient, rp j j; from DNS of 2-D compressible mixing layers. The mixing layer convects from left to right. The higher speed stream is at the upper portion of the flow field, and the lower speed stream is at the lower side of the flow field. x is plotted by contour, the colors of which represent velocity divergence. Pressure waves are identified by rp j j with blue contours. a Mc = 0.4. The contour levels for x range from -1.24 to 0.01 with 30 levels. The color levels for r u ~range from -0.001 to 0.001. b Mc = 0.8. The contour levels of x range from -1.24 to 0.01 with 30 levels. The color levels for r u ~ range from -0.005 to 0.005. The boundary for rp j j is determined by 0.1

This thesis is concerned with investigating the applicability of large eddy simulations (LES) for simulating compressible mixing layers, with the ultimate aim of utilizing LES as a tool to investigate the effects of compressibility and confinement on the evolution of mixing layers. In view of the inability of temporal simulations to capture all the features involved in mixing layers as encounte...
متن کاملCompressibility Effects on the Growth and Development of Large-Scale Structures in an Axisymmetric Jet
A temporally resolved flow visualization system that produces 17 flow images over a time span of 128 microseconds is used to visualize the mixing layers of a Mach 1.28 (M c =0.59) and a Mach 2.06 (M c =0.87) ideally expanded high Reynolds number axisymmetric jets. These image sequences revealed details about the effects of compressibility on the dynamics of turbulence structures. In general, th...

A real-time flow visualization system that produces 17 images over a time span of 150 ms is used to visualize the mixing layers of Mach 1.3 (M c50.59) and Mach 2.0 (M c50.87) ideally expanded high Reynolds number axisymmetric jets. These image sequences reveal details about the influence of compressibility on the dynamics of turbulence structures. In general, the behavior observed in axisymmetr...
متن کاملAIAA 98–0697 Velocity Field of the Planar Shear Layer: Compressibility Effects
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to measure the instantaneous two-dimensional velocity field in turbulent, planar mixing layers at varying levels of compressibility. The structure of the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields are seen to display similar variation with compressibility as the scalar field, with the spatial intermittency of the velocity field tied to the interfaces of...
متن کاملVisualization of Rayleigh–Taylor flows from Boussinesq approximation to fully compressible Navier–Stokes model
Visualizations of Rayleigh–Taylor turbulent mixing layers are presented. Three Navier–Stokes models are used: Boussinesq, anelastic and fully compressible. Isosurfaces and slices of concentration, vorticity, Q-criterion, turbulent kinetic energy, local Taylor-microscale Reynolds number, dissipation, pressure and temperature are displayed. This gives an overall picture of the Rayleigh–Taylor flo...
