Compensating losses in negative-index metamaterials by optical parametric amplification.

Optical parametric amplification controlled by the auxiliary electromagnetic field enables transparency, amplification, and oscillation with no cavity in strongly absorbing negative-index metamaterials. The opposite directions of the wave vector and the Poynting vector in such materials result in extraordinary optical properties, including "backward" phase matching and the generation of entangl...

Coherent nonlinear optics and quantum control in negative-index metamaterials

The extraordinary properties of laser-induced transparency of a negative-index slab and parametric amplification for a backward-wave signal are investigated. The effects of the idler absorption and phase mismatch on the amplification of the signal are studied, and the feasibility of ensuring robust transparency for a broad range of control field intensities and slab thicknesses is shown. A part...

Negative-index metamaterials: second-harmonic generation, Manley–Rowe relations and parametric amplification

Second harmonic generation and optical parametric amplification in negative-index metamaterials (NIMs) are studied. The opposite directions of the wave vector and the Poynting vector in NIMs results in a “backward” phasematching condition, causing significant changes in the Manley– Rowe relations and spatial distributions of the coupled field intensities. It is shown that absorption in NIMs can...

All-optically transformable broad-band transparency and amplification in negative-index films

Negative-index metamaterials (NIMs) exhibit highly unusual optical properties and promise a great variety of unprecedented applications. However, strong optical absorption inherent to such materials imposes severe limitation on such applications. The possibility to overcome this obstacle was proposed based on the coherent energy transfer from the control field to the signal through three-wavemi...
