Session XII: Saturday, February 3, 2007 478. EFFICIENT, ACCURATE AND ROBUST LEFT-VENTRICULAR DIASTOLIC FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS BASED ON SHORT-AXIS CINE CARDIAC MRI Marcel Breeuwer, PhD, Gilion Hautvast. Philips Medical Systems, Best, The Netherlands. Introduction: Congestive heart failure is increasingly becoming a problem in the elderly population and is associated with an increased morbidity and mortality. Diastolic dysfunction is an important cause of congestive heart failure. It often occurs when systolic function is still normal. Analysis of diastolic function is, therefore, becoming an important clinical application. Conventionally, diastolic functional analysis is performed on the basis of Nuclear Medicine or Echocardiography (1, 2). Purpose: We present a method for the almost automatic determination of diastolic functional parameters from short-axis cine CMR images. We furthermore present the assessment of the accuracy and robustness of the method. Methods: The diastolic functional parameters are derived from the volume over time curve v(t) of the left ventricle. This volume curve is obtained by first semi-automatically segmenting the left-ventricular blood pool from the cine cardiac MR images for all slices and phases using a method presented in (3) and subsequently calculating the volume per phase using the well-known Simpson’s Rule. After a spline-based temporal interpolation, the first order derivative (dv/dt) is determined and the following diastolic functional parameters are automatically estimated using FIG. 1. Parameters derived from the volume curve v(t). FIG. 2. Example of synthetic volume curve with detected diastolic

Comparison of short and long axis methods in cardiac MR imaging and echocardiography for left ventricular function.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare long axis and short axis methods in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and echocardiography for the evaluation of left ventricular function and mass. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 15 patients with a history of myocardial infarction and 5 patients with normal ventricular function who were examined with cardiac MRI and echocardi...
متن کاملDetecting left ventricular impaired relaxation in cardiac MRI using moving mesh correspondences
UNLABELLED Anatomical cine cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is widely used to assess the systolic cardiac function because of its high soft tissue contrast. Assessment of diastolic LV function has not regularly been performed due the complex and time consuming procedures. This study presents a semi-automated assessment of the left ventricular (LV) diastolic function using anatomi...
متن کاملLeft ventricular ejection fraction calculation from automatically selected and processed diastolic and systolic frames in short-axis cine-MRI.
The calculation of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is dependent upon the accurate measurement of diastolic and systolic left ventricular volumes. Although breath-hold cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows coverage of the whole cardiac cycle with an excellent time resolution, many authors rely on the visual selection of diastolic and the systolic short-axis slices in order t...
متن کاملMotion corrected LV quantification based on 3D modelling for improved functional assessment in cardiac MRI.
Cine MRI is a clinical reference standard for the quantitative assessment of cardiac function, but reproducibility is confounded by motion artefacts. We explore the feasibility of a motion corrected 3D left ventricle (LV) quantification method, incorporating multislice image registration into the 3D model reconstruction, to improve reproducibility of 3D LV functional quantification. Multi-breat...
متن کاملAssessment of Left Ventricular Function and Mass on Free-Breathing Compressed Sensing Real-Time Cine Imaging.
BACKGROUND Compressed sensing (CS) cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the advantage of being inherently insensitive to respiratory motion. This study compared the accuracy of free-breathing (FB) CS and breath-hold (BH) standard cine MRI for left ventricular (LV) volume assessment. Methods and Results:Sixty-three patients underwent cine MRI with both techniques. Both types of images were a...
