Gravitational Lensing Limits On The Average Redshift Of Gamma Ray Bursts From Evolving Galaxies

چکیده
The nondetection of multiple images in the BATSE 4B catalog implies an upper limit to average redshift < z > of gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Here we calculate an upper limit to < z >, independent of the physical model for GRBs, using a filled approximation to compute the lensing rate for GRBs at high z for a variety of cosmologies. The upper limit on < z > depends directly on the cosmological parameters Ω and Λ. The other factor which can change the average redshift of GRBs is the evolution of the lensing galaxies. We find that merging of lensing galaxies puts the GRBs at higher redshifts as compare to nonevolving model of galaxies. Gravitational Lensing Bound On The Average Redshift Of Gamma Ray Bursts In Models With Evolving Lenses

متن کاملGravitational Lensing Limits on the Average Redshift of Gamma-ray Bursts
The lack of bright host galaxies in several recently examined gamma-ray burst (GRB) error boxes suggests that the redshifts of cosmological GRBs may be signiÐcantly higher than previously hypothesized. On the other hand, the nondetection of multiple images in the Fourth BATSE Gamma-Ray Burst Catalog (hereafter 4B catalog) implies an upper limit to the average redshift SzT of GRBs. Here we calcu...
متن کاملSmall-Angle Scattering of X-Rays from Extragalactic Sources by Dust in Intervening Galaxies
Gamma-ray bursts are now known to be a cosmological population of objects, which are often accompanied by X-ray and optical afterglows. The total energy emitted in the afterglow can be similar to the energy radiated in the gamma-ray burst itself. If a galaxy containing a large column density of dust is near the line of sight to a gamma-ray burst, small-angle scattering of the X-rays due to diff...
متن کاملOn the Association of Gamma–ray Bursts with Massive Stars: Implications for Number Counts and Lensing Statistics
Recent evidence appears to link gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to star-forming regions in galaxies at cosmological distances. If short-lived massive stars are the progenitors of GRBs, the rate of events per unit cosmological volume should be an unbiased tracer (i.e. unaffected by dust obscuration and surface brightness limits) of the cosmic history of star formation. Here we use realistic estimates fo...
متن کاملGravitationally Lensed Gamma-Ray Bursts as Probes of Dark Compact Objects
If dark matter in the form of compact objects comprises a large fraction of the mass of the universe, then gravitational lensing effects on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are expected. We utilize BATSE and Ulysses data to search for lenses of different mass ranges, which cause lensing in the milli, pico, and femto regimes. Null results are used to set weak limits on the cosmological abundance of compa...
