Flow of Aqueous Humor in Humans

چکیده
Richard F. Figure 1 shows a human eye without its aqueous circulation. The cornea is thickened, the anterior chamber is absent, the iris is partly atrophic, and the lens is cataractous. The picture serves as a reminder of the dependency of the health of the eye on the continuous supply of aqueous humor that circulates through its chambers. It is surprising that it was not known until recently that aqueous humor was formed continuously and drained.

The effect of topical timolol on epinephrine-stimulated aqueous humor flow in sleeping humans.
PURPOSE It has been shown that intravenously administered epinephrine can increase the rate of aqueous humor flow in sleeping humans. This experiment was conducted to determine if this stimulatory effect can be blocked by the beta-adrenergic antagonist timolol. METHODS Twenty normal human subjects were studied for one sleep cycle at night. Epinephrine was infused intravenously at a rate of 1 ...
متن کاملThe nocturnal suppression of aqueous humor flow in humans is not blocked by bright light.
Normal human subjects were studied hourly by fluorophotometry to measure the normal circadian rhythm of aqueous humor flow. On a separate day, the subjects slept for approximately 1 hr after lunch; this short nap was not found to have any effect on aqueous flow. On a separate night, the subjects slept under a bright light of 2500 lux; the light was not found to have any effect on flow in the sl...
متن کاملEffect of chronic epinephrine on aqueous humor flow during the day and during sleep in normal healthy subjects.
Epinephrine 2% drops were administered to one eye and a placebo to the fellow eye twice a day for 2 weeks in 18 normal human volunteers. The circadian rhythm of aqueous humor flow was measured by fluorophotometry. Epinephrine (compared with placebo) had no measurable effect on the rate of aqueous flow or the circadian rhythm of aqueous humor flow. These results suggest either that topical appli...
متن کاملAqueous Humor Dynamics: A Review
Glaucoma is a family of optic neuropathies which cause irreversible but potentially preventable vision loss. Vision loss in most forms of glaucoma is related to elevated IOP with subsequent injury to the optic nerve. Secretion of aqueous humor and regulation of its outflow are physiologically important processes for maintaining IOP in the normal range. Thus, understanding the complex mechanisms...
متن کاملThe effect of isoproterenol on aqueous humor formation in humans.
Isoproterenol was applied topically to one eye of each of 20 normal human volunteers. The rate of aqueous humor flow was measured with fluorophotometry. Intraocular pressure fell slightly in the treated eye, but the rate of aqueous humor flow was unaltered. Even when applied to the cornea in high concentrations, this beta-adrenergic agonist appeared to have no measurable effect on the flow of a...
متن کاملThe aqueous humor outflow pathway of zebrafish.
PURPOSE The structures of the ocular anterior segment responsible for aqueous humor secretion and absorption have been well characterized in mammals. However, the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate aqueous humor flow have remained elusive. Experimental analysis in Danio rerio, the zebrafish, is providing mechanistic insights into many cellular processes relevant to norma...
