Quasi-local Mass and the Existence of Horizons

چکیده
In this paper, we obtain lower bounds for the BrownYork quasilocal mass and the Bartnik quasilocal mass for compact three manifolds with smooth boundaries. As a consequence, we derive sufficient conditions for the existence of horizons for a certain class of compact manifolds with boundary and some asymptotically flat complete manifolds. The method is based on analyzing Hawking mass and inverse mean curvature flow.

Recent results in mathematical relativity
We review selected recent results concerning the global structure of solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations. The topics covered include quasi-local mass, strong cosmic censorship, non-linear stability, new constructions of solutions of the constraint equations, improved understanding of asymptotic properties of the solutions, existence of solutions with low regularity, and construction of i...
متن کاملAn Introduction to Local Black Hole Horizons in the 3+1 Approach to General Relativity
We present an introduction to dynamical trapping horizons as quasi-local models for black hole horizons, from the perspective of an Initial Value Problem approach to the construction of generic black hole spacetimes. We focus on the geometric and structural properties of these horizons aiming, as a main application, at the numerical evolution and analysis of black hole spacetimes in astrophysic...
متن کاملMechanics of Isolated Horizons
A set of boundary conditions defining an undistorted, non-rotating isolated horizon are specified in general relativity. A space-time representing a black hole which is itself in equilibrium but whose exterior contains radiation admits such a horizon. However, the definition is applicable in a more general context, such as cosmological horizons. Physically motivated, (quasi-)local definitions o...
متن کاملThe horizon-entropy increase law for causal and quasi-local horizons and conformal field redefinitions
We explicitly prove the horizon-entropy increase law for both causal and quasi-locally defined horizons in scalar-tensor and f(R) gravity theories. Contrary to causal event horizons, future outer trapping horizons are not conformally invariant and we provide a modification of trapping horizons to complete the proof, using the idea of generalised entropy. This modification means they are no long...
متن کاملHair from the Isolated Horizon Perspective
The recently introduced Isolated Horizons (IH) formalism has become a powerful tool for realistic black hole physics. In particular, it generalizes the zeroth and first laws of black hole mechanics in terms of quasi-local quantities and serves as a starting point for quantum entropy calculations. In this note we consider theories which admit hair, and analyze some new results that the IH provid...
