Local Object Gist: Meaningful Shapes and Spatial Layout at a Very Early Stage of Visual Processing

چکیده
In his introduction, Pinna (2010) quoted one of Wertheimer’s observations: “I stand at the window and see a house, trees, sky. Theoretically I might say there were 327 brightnesses and nuances of color. Do I have ‘327’? No. I have sky, house, and trees.” This seems quite remarkable, for Max Wertheimer, together with Kurt Koffka and Wolfgang Koehler, was a pioneer of Gestalt Theory: perceptual organisation was tackled considering grouping rules of line and edge elements in relation to figure-ground segregation, i.e., a meaningful object (the figure) as perceived against a complex background (the ground).

A Model of Approximate Spatial Layout Processing in Early Vision
For many purposes, knowing where things are in one's immediate environment is just as important as knowing what they are. Humans and other natural systems are very adept at extracting such spatial information from vision. They do it rapidly, automatically, and often seem to make do with only approximate information. Without the time or opportunity to perform a careful analysis of one's environm...
متن کاملBuilding the gist of a scene: the role of global image features in recognition.
Humans can recognize the gist of a novel image in a single glance, independent of its complexity. How is this remarkable feat accomplished? On the basis of behavioral and computational evidence, this paper describes a formal approach to the representation and the mechanism of scene gist understanding, based on scene-centered, rather than object-centered primitives. We show that the structure of...
متن کاملObject-Oriented Method for Automatic Extraction of Road from High Resolution Satellite Images
As the information carried in a high spatial resolution image is not represented by single pixels but by meaningful image objects, which include the association of multiple pixels and their mutual relations, the object based method has become one of the most commonly used strategies for the processing of high resolution imagery. This processing comprises two fundamental and critical steps towar...
متن کاملHierarchical representation of shapes in visual cortex—from localized features to figural shape segregation
Visual structures in the environment are segmented into image regions and those combined to a representation of surfaces and prototypical objects. Such a perceptual organization is performed by complex neural mechanisms in the visual cortex of primates. Multiple mutually connected areas in the ventral cortical pathway receive visual input and extract local form features that are subsequently gr...
متن کاملThe Perceptual Organization of Depth
Introduction The goal of depth perception is to identify the spatial layout of the objects and surfaces that constitute our surroundings. One important observation about the world around us that influences the way we see depth is that physical matter is not distributed randomly, with arbitrary depths at every location. On the contrary, the environment is generally organized: the world consists ...
