چکیده
Introduction Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a polymicrobial infection of upper genital tract (usually fallopian tubes). It is a serious infectious disease of sexually active women with sequelae such as infertility and ectopic pregnancy (1, 2). It is most commonly caused by Neisseria gonorrhoea, Chlamydia trachomatis and other aerobic and anaerobic pathogens (3, 4). Most patients of PID are treated as outpatients with hospitalization reserved for sick patients or those with complications like diffuse peritonitis or pelvic abscess (5). In view of multiplicity of pathogens combined with the difficulty in obtaining cultures from upper genital tract sites, centre for disease Abstract

Improvement in the clinical cure rate of outpatient management of pelvic inflammatory disease following a change in therapy.
OBJECTIVE In the United Kingdom many genitourinary medicine clinics use oral doxycycline and metronidazole to treat pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). A retrospective case note review of PID treatment at our department in 2000 showed that the clinical cure rate (CCR) was only 55% with oral doxycycline and metronidazole for 2 weeks. We therefore added ceftriaxone 250 mg intramuscularly to the do...

OBJECTIVE The current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines include 2 drugs, doxycycline and ofloxacin, for treatment of the chlamydial component of outpatient pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Although ofloxacin costs about $90 more than doxycycline, doxycycline is frequently associated with side effects and patient compliance with this drug is probably poor. Because cli...

Treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) should provide high rates of clinical and microbiological cure for a range of pathogens and should ultimately prevent reproductive morbidity. Between 1992 and 2006, 5 randomized clinical trials of moxifloxacin (1 trial), ofloxacin (1 trial), clindamycin-ciprofloxacin (1 trial), and azithromycin (2 trials) treatment among women with mild to moderate...
متن کاملTreating pelvic inflammatory disease with doxycycline and metronidazole or penicillin and metronidazole.
The best way of treating pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is not known. The clinical response to two treatment regimens (penicillin plus metronidazole v doxycycline plus metronidazole) was studied in 33 patients with PID confirmed by laparoscopy and endometrial biopsy. The overall failure rate, according to the criteria used in this study was five of 11 (45%) women with chlamydial PID, none of...

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a polymicrobial infection of the upper genital tract. It primarily affects young, sexually active women. The diagnosis is made clinically; no single test or study is sensitive or specific enough for a definitive diagnosis. Pelvic inflammatory disease should be suspected in at-risk patients who present with pelvic or lower abdominal pain with no identified etiology...
