Characterizing and mapping forest fire fuels using ASTER imagery and gradient modeling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Land managers need cost-effective methods for mapping and characterizing forest fuels quickly and accurately. The launch of satellite sensors with increased spatial resolution may improve the accuracy and reduce the cost of fuels mapping. The objective of this research is to evaluate the accuracy and utility of imagery from the advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (ASTER) satellite sensor, and gradient modeling, for mapping fuel layers for fire behavior modeling with FARSITE and FLAMMAP. Empirical models, based upon field data and spectral information from an ASTER image, were employed to test the efficacy of ASTER for mapping and characterizing crown closure and crown bulk density. Surface fuel models (National Forest Fire Laboratory (NFFL) 1–13) were mapped using a classification tree based upon three gradient layers; potential vegetation type, cover type, and structural stage. The final surface fuel model layer had an overall accuracy of 0.632 (KHAT = 0.536). Results for the canopy fuel empirical models developed here suggest that vegetation indices incorporating visible wavelengths (i.e. the green red vegetation index (GRVI)) are suitable for predicting crown closure and crown bulk density (r = 0.76. and 0.46, respectively). # 2005 Elsevier B.V. متن کاملMapping wildland fuels for fire management across multiple scales: Integrating remote sensing, GIS, and biophysical modeling
Fuel maps are essential for computing spatial fire hazard and risk and simulating fire growth and intensity across a landscape. However, fuel mapping is an extremely difficult and complex process requiring expertise in remotely sensed image classification, fire behavior, fuels modeling, ecology, and geographical information systems (GIS). This paper first presents the challenges of mapping fuel...
متن کاملA Multivariate Approach to Mapping Forest Vegetation and Fuels Using Gis Databases, Satellite Imagery, and Forest Inventory Plots
Knowing the types and amounts of fuels at a site is an important prerequisite to evaluating fire risk, predicting fire behavior, and assessing potential fire effects. When these assessments are expanded to larger extents, the spatial configuration of the landscape fuel mosaic must also be considered (Keane et al. 2000: Keane et al. 1998). Spatial patterns of fuels, topography, and wind all inte...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of SVM and RF Methods for Classification of Alteration Zones Using Remotely Sensed Data
Identification and mapping of the significant alterations are the main objectives of the exploration geochemical surveys. The field study is time-consuming and costly to produce the classified maps. Therefore, the processing of remotely sensed data, which provide timely and multi-band (multi-layer) data, can be substituted for the field study. In this study, the ASTER imagery is used for altera...
