Fluctuational electrodynamics calculations of near-field heat transfer in non-planar geometries_ A brief overview

چکیده
Near-field electromagnetic heat transfer is of interest for a variety of applications, including energy conversion, and precision heating, cooling and imaging of nanostructures. This past decade has seen considerable progress in the study of near-field electromagnetic heat transfer, but it is only very recently that numerically exact methods have been developed for treating near-field heat transfer in the fluctuational electrodynamics formalism for non-trivial geometries. In this paper we provide a tutorial review of these exact methods, with an emphasis on the computational aspects of three important methods, which we compare in the context of a canonical example, the coupled dielectric sphere problem. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. متن کاملGiant heat transfer in the crossover regime between conduction and radiation
Heat is transferred by radiation between two well-separated bodies at temperatures of finite difference in vacuum. At large distances the heat transfer can be described by black body radiation, at shorter distances evanescent modes start to contribute, and at separations comparable to inter-atomic spacing the transition to heat conduction should take place. We report on quantitative measurement...

Correlatioiis aud spectral properties of thermal light have been the subject of many studies since the developmeut ofstatistical optics aid modern coherence In most of the studies, the nonradiating (near field) part ofthe emitted light is disregarded, because it plays no role in the Car-field emission properties of planar sources. Neveitlieless, recent interest in microscale and nanoscale radia...
متن کاملEnhancement and Tunability of Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer Mediated by Surface Plasmon Polaritons in Thin Plasmonic Films
The properties of thermal radiation exchange between hot and cold objects can be strongly modified if they interact in the near field where electromagnetic coupling occurs across gaps narrower than the dominant wavelength of thermal radiation. Using a rigorous fluctuational electrodynamics approach, we predict that ultra-thin films of plasmonic materials can be used to dramatically enhance near...
متن کاملRadiative heat transfer exceeding the blackbody limit between macroscale planar surfaces separated by a nanosize vacuum gap
Using Rytov's fluctuational electrodynamics framework, Polder and Van Hove predicted that radiative heat transfer between planar surfaces separated by a vacuum gap smaller than the thermal wavelength exceeds the blackbody limit due to tunnelling of evanescent modes. This finding has led to the conceptualization of systems capitalizing on evanescent modes such as thermophotovoltaic converters an...
