Prevention of cortical breach during placement of an antegrade intramedullary femoral nail.

چکیده
The radius of curvature of femoral intramedullary nails does not match the average radius of curvature of the human femur. Anterior cortical breach of the distal femur during nail placement has been reported in certain fracture patterns, in femora with a smaller radius of curvature, and at the starting point of the nail. The authors describe a novel technique used to prevent anterior cortical disruption of the femur using multiple percutaneously placed Steinmann pins. This technique ensures safe passage of medullary reamers and the femoral nail.

Distal Femoral Complications Following Antegrade Intramedullary Nail Placement
While antegrade nailing for proximal and diaphyseal femur fractures is a commonly utilized fixation method with benefits including early mobilization and high rates of fracture union, both intraoperative and postoperative complications may occur. Intraoperative errors include leg length discrepancy, anterior cortical perforation, malreduction of the fracture, and neurovascular injury, and posto...
متن کاملPeri-Implant Fractures Distal to an Antegrade Femoral Nail: A Case Series
Peri-implant fractures distal to an antegrade femoral nail are uncommon injuries, with no current consensus on the best treatment modality. We are presenting three cases of periimplant fractures distal to an antegrade femoral nail. All patients sustained an initial traumatic injury, which was managed with an antegrade femoral nail fixation. They subsequently suffer a second injury which causes ...
متن کاملHeterotopic ossification in the reaming tract of a percutaneous antegrade femoral nail: a case report
INTRODUCTION Heterotopic ossification is a rare complication of musculoskeletal injuries, characterized by bone growth in soft tissues. Percutaneous antegrade intramedullary nailing represents the 'gold standard' for the treatment of femur shaft fractures. Minor bone growth is frequently seen around the proximal end of reamed femoral nails (so-called 'callus caps'), which are asymptomatic and l...
متن کاملComparison of Outcome of Femoral Shaft Fracture Fixation with Intramedullary Nail in Elderly Patient and Patients Younger than 60 Years Old
Background: Although intramedullary nailing (IMN) is an established and accepted operative treatment for femoral shaft fracture in patients younger than 60, there is a lack of data on the results of this treatment on those over 60. The purpose of this study was to determine if the outcome of IMN for femoral shaft fracture in elderly patients is also acceptable. Particular challenges in this g...
متن کاملElastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing of Femoral Shaft Fracture-Experience in 48 Children
Background: Femoral shaft fractures are an incapacitating pediatric injury accounting for 1.6% of all pediatric bonyinjuries. Management of these fractures is largely directed by age, fracture pattern, associated injuries, built of the childand socioeconomic status of the family. We retrospectively evaluated the use of elastic stable intramedullary nail (ESIN)in surgical management of femoral s...
