Characterising objective pro®les of Costa Rican dairy farmers

چکیده
Farmers' objectives and the factors aecting them were studied in 91 dairy farms in Costa Rica. Objective's hierarchies were studied using Rokeach's technique with a mixture of personal, economic and familiar goals. A canonical correlation analysis was performed to ®nd out simple and canonical correlations between farmers'/farms' characteristics and objective priorities. Factor analysis combined with a cluster analysis was used to reduce the number of variables involved and to de®ne groups of farmers with similar economic, personal and familiar and overall objective pro®les. A multiple correspondence analysis was used to graphically represent the relationships between farmers'/farms' characteristics and objective pro®les. Results showed that economic goals were the most important for the majority of farmers. Low to medium signi®cant simple correlations and one medium to high canonical correlation were found, showing that age, educational level, the distance of the farm to population centres, the level of dedication and pasture area were the characteristics that had the largest impact on the arrangement of objectives. The overall cluster analysis con®rmed that economic oriented farmers were more frequent in the population. However, farmers with personal and familiar pro®les were also found. It was concluded that the farmers'/farms' characteristics, although signi®cant, explained a small proportion of the variation in the objective hierarchies. Nevertheless, well-de®ned groups of farmers could be found. These 0308-521X/01/$ see front matter # 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. Cytogenetic effects from exposure to mixed pesticides and the influence from genetic susceptibility.
Exposure to pesticides remains a major environmental health problem. Health risk from such exposure needs to be more precisely understood. We conducted three different cytogenetic assays to elucidate the biological effects of exposure to mixed pesticides in 20 Costa Rica farmers (all nonsmokers) compared with 20 matched controls. The farmers were also exposed to dibromochloropropane during the ...

Decision-making approaches, the factors aecting them, the role of the decision-making units and the actors involved in farming decisions were studied in 91 Costa Rican farmers using a classi®cation procedure. Farmers were asked to classify 18 farming decisions (systematically selected from a pool of 100) into a series of categories of decision-making units (Alone, Family, Shared, Delegated) an...

INTRODUCTION Work-related chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represents a considerable part of the disease burden globally. OBJECTIVE To assess the COPD prevalence and characteristics in never-smoking dairy farmers. MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY We have conducted a cross-sectional study with 75 male dairy farmers aged 26 to 59 years, and compared them with equivalent number of male of...

OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shown an increase of mild serum cobalamin (vitamin B(12)) deficiency in some Latin American countries; however, no data are available from Costa Rica. The purpose of this work was to establish the prevalence of serum vitamin B(12) deficiency among Costa Rican young adults and to study some factors that may help explain the serum cobalamin concentrations. METHODS ...

There is limited research investigating the motivators and barriers to vaccinating dairy cattle. Veterinary surgeons have been identified as important sources of information for farmers making vaccination and disease control decisions, as well as being farmers' preferred vaccine suppliers. Vets' perception of their own role and communication style can be at odds with farmers' reported preferenc...
