چکیده
Autonomous in-flight air refueling is an important capability for the future deployment of unmanned air vehicles, since they will likely be ferried in flight to overseas theaters of operation instead of being shipped unassembled in containers. This paper introduces a vision sensor based on active deformable contour algorithms, and a relative navigation system that enables precise and reliable boom and receptacle autonomous air refueling for non micro sized unmanned air vehicles. The sensor is mounted on the tanker aircraft near the boom, and images a single passive target image painted near the refueling receptacle on the receiver aircraft. Controllers are developed for the automatic control of the refueling boom, and for the station keeping controller of the receiver aircraft. The boom controller is integrated with the active deformable contour sensor system, and feasibility of the total system is demonstrated by simulated docking maneuvers in the presence of various levels of turbulence. Results indicate that the integrated sensor and controller enables precise boom and receptacle air refueling, including consideration of realistic measurement errors and disturbances.

Effects of Stereopsis, Collimation, and Head Tracking on Air Refueling Boom Operator Performance
This paper describes an evaluation of the effects of three practical display design variables on air refueling boom operator estimates of distance, ratings of image stability and ratings of visual comfort. Eight combinations of three design variables were tested. Two separate display systems, one collimated and the other direct view, were set up such that stereopsis and head tracking could be t...

متن کاملLow-Boom Performance Demonstration of a Long, Staged Aftbody*
The effectiveness of a “staged aftbody” proposed by Toyoda et al. (AIAA J., Vol. 52, 2014, pp. 2899–2901) was further investigated using an aeroballistic range with a free-flight Mach number of 1.7. Near-field pressure signatures were obtained from a pressure transducer that was flush-mounted on a flat plate. From these signatures, far-field pressure signatures were obtained by the waveform par...
متن کاملNumerical and Mesh Resolution Requirements for Accurate Sonic Boom Prediction of Complete Aircraft Configurations
A careful study is conducted to assess the numerical mesh resolution requirements for the accurate computation of sonic boom ground signatures produced by complete aircraft configurations. The details of the ground signature can depend heavily on the accurate prediction of the pressure distribution in the near-field of the aircraft. It is, therefore, important to accurately describe the geometr...
