Fault-bound valley associated with the Rembrandt basin on Mercury

چکیده
The Rembrandt basin is crosscut by the largest fault scarp on Mercury, Enterprise Rupes, and a second scarp complex, Belgica Rupes, extends to the basin’s rim. Topographic data derived fromMESSENGER orbital stereo images show that these tectonic landforms bound a broad, relatively flat-floored valley with a mean width of ~400 km. Crosscutting relations suggest that the accumulation of structural relief likely postdates the formation and volcanic infilling of the Rembrandt basin. The valley floor, bound by fault scarps of opposite vergence, is significantly offset below the elevation of the back-scarp terrains. Along with an offset section of Rembrandt’s rim, the elevation differences are evidence that the valley floor was lowered as a result of the formation of bounding fault scarps. The localization of the widely spaced thrust faults of Enterprise and Belgica Rupis and the offset of the valley floor may be the result of long-wavelength buckling of Mercury’s lithosphere.

Rembrandt Impact Basin on Mercury: Determining the Origin of Low- and High- Albedo Smooth Plains
Introduction: Rembrandt impact basin (~715 km in diameter) is one the largest and most well-preserved impact basins on Mercury [1]. Crater density measurements indicate that Rembrandt is comparable in age to the Caloris impact basin, the largest and also one of the youngest basins on Mercury [e.g., 2, 3]. The basin rim-crest is visible and several massifs define an inner ring approximately 450 ...
متن کاملRembrandt impact basin: Distinguishing between volcanic and impact-produced plains on Mercury
The surface of Mercury has been heavily modified by impact cratering and volcanic plains since the initial formation of its lithosphere and crust. As in the case of the Moon, the origin of early plains deposits has been difficult to determine because ponded impact basin ejecta and impact melt deposits can mimic the topography and texture of extrusive volcanic plains. In order to understand bett...
متن کاملThe zoning of the relative morphotectonic activity of the Kan-Soleghan basin with an emphasis on the location of the Tehran-North Freeway tunnel
The Kan-Soleghan basin is located on the southern Hillside of the Alborz, which has affected the Alp-Himalayan active zone over time. In this respect, the evaluation of active tectonic processes and their effects on many human activities, such as the design and construction of cities, powerhouse, dams, industrial facilities are of great importance. The passage of the Tehran-North Freeway Tunnel...
متن کاملEvolution of Extensional Basins and Basin and Range Topography West of Death Valley, California
Neogene extension in the Death Valley region, SE California, has produced a variety of sedimentary basins. Diachronous movements on an array of strike-slip and normal fault systems have resulted in the uplift and preservation of older basins in modern ranges. One of the best exposed of these is the Nova basin on the western flank of the Panamint Mountains. The Nova basin includes over 2000 m of...
متن کاملMesozoic basin inversion in Central Alborz, evidence from the evolution of Taleqan-Gajereh-Lar paleograben
This paper presents evidence on Mesozoic inversion of basin bounding faults within the Taleqan-Gajereh-Lar Paleograben (TGLP) in Central Alborz Range. For this purpose, well documented stratigraphy data across the TGLP together with the new acquired structural data on the geometry and kinematics of the paleograben basin bounding faults are utilized. The TGLP has evolved through the Early and Mi...
