چکیده

One of the primary aims of the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso lab. (at an average depth of 3700 mwe) was the search in the penetrating cosmic radiation for the supermassive magnetic monopoles (MMs) predicted by Grand Unified Theories of the electroweak and strong interactions; the search was planned for a sensitivity level well below the Parker bound (∼ 10 cm s sr) and for a large range of velocities, 4 · 10 < β < 1, β= v/c. MACRO used three different types of detectors: liquid scintillators, limited steamer tubes and nuclear track detectors (NTDs; CR39 and Lexan) arranged in a closed-box modular structure, divided into a lower and an upper (“Attico”) part. The overall dimensions of the apparatus were 76.5×12×9.3m. MACRO took data from early 1989 till december 2000 [1]. The response of the three types of detectors to slow and fast particles was experimentally studied [2 4]. The use of three types of subdetectors with redundant electronics, in stand alone and combined modes, ensured redundancy of information, cross-checks and indipendent signatures for

Summary of MACRO results on exotic physics

MACRO was a multi-purpose experiment that took data from 1989 to 2000, at the underground Laboratory of Gran Sasso (Italy). MACRO gave important results/limits concerning: (i) the oscillation of atmospheric neutrinos, also in the non-conventional scenario of violations of Lorentz invariance, (ii) the searches for exotic particles (supermassive GUT magnetic monopoles, nuclearites, WIMPs), (iii) ...

The MACRO Experiment at Gran Sasso

In this overview of the MACRO experiment we recall the structure of the detector and discuss several physics topics: atmospheric neutrinos and neutrino oscillations, high energy neutrino astronomy, searches for WIMPs and for low energy stellar gravitational collapse neutrinos, stringent upper limits on GUT magnetic monopoles, high energy downgoing muons, primary cosmic ray composition and shado...

We used Nuclear Track Detectors (NTD) CR39 and Makrofol for many purposes: i) Exposures at the SPS and at lower energy accelerator heavy ion beams for calibration purposes and for fragmentation studies. ii) Searches for GUT and Intermediate Mass Magnetic Monopoles (IMM), nuclearites, Q-balls and strangelets in the cosmic radiation. The MACRO experiment in the Gran Sasso underground lab, with ∼1...

Massive rare particles have been searched for in the penetrating cosmic radiation using the MACRO apparatus at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories. Liquid scintillators, streamer tubes and nuclear track detectors have been used to search for magnetic monopoles (MMs). Based on no observation of such signals, stringent flux limits are established for MMs as slow as a few 10c. The methods based o...

Search for magnetic monopoles with nuclear track detectors

This paper describes an experimental search for GUT magnetic monopoles in the MACRO experiment using the nuclear track subdetector CR39. After discussing the working principle, the charge resolution and the calibration of the detector, the experimental procedure for searching for magnetic monopoles is described. Since no candidates were found, the upper flux limits obtained by the MACRO CR39 us...
