چکیده

The literature of olefin metathesis by heterogeneous supported catalysts, both industrial-type supported metal oxides (ReOx/Al2O3, ReOx/(SiO2−Al2O3), MoOx/SiO2, MoOx/Al2O3, MoOx/(SiO2−Al2O3), WOx/SiO2, and WOx/ (SiO2−Al2O3)) and supported organometallic complexes, is comprehensively reviewed. The focus of this Review is supported metal oxide catalysts, but the well-defined supported organometallic catalyst literature is also covered because such model catalysts have the potential to bridge heterogeneous and homogeneous olefin metathesis catalysis. The recent world shortage of small olefin feedstocks has created renewed interest in olefin metathesis as a route to synthesizing small olefins and is reflected in the recent growth of the patent literature. Despite the extensive application of supported metal oxides in industry for metathesis of small and large olefins, the molecular structures and oxidation states of the catalytic active sites, surface reaction intermediates, and reaction mechanisms of this important catalytic reaction have still not been resolved. The absence of reported in situ and operando spectroscopic studies from the olefin metathesis catalysis literature has hampered progress in this area. It appears from this literature review that the topic of olefin metathesis by heterogeneous supported metal oxide catalysts is still a relatively undeveloped research area and is poised for significant progress in understanding of the fundamental molecular details of these important catalytic systems in the coming years.

Highly Efficient Activation, Regeneration, and Active Site Identification of Oxide-Based Olefin Metathesis Catalysts

Supported metal oxide based olefin metathesis catalysts are widely used in the chemical industry. In comparison to their organometallic catalyst cousins, the oxide catalysts have much lower activity due to the very small fraction of active sites. We report that a simple pretreatment of MoO3/SiO2 and WO3/SiO2 under an olefincontaining atmosphere at elevated temperatures leads to a 100−1000fold i...

Olefin Metathesis . A Mechanistic Study of High - Valent Group 6 Catalysts Anthony

The results of an ab initio theoretical mechanistic study are used to suggest that oxo-alkylidene complexes are the active, chain-carrying metathesis catalysts for high-valent Mo, W, and Re complexes and that the oxygen ligand is intimately involved in the catalytic process. Furthermore, we suggest that oxo-alkylidene complexes are formed on supported molybdate and tungstenate catalysts and tha...

Recent Advancements in Stereoselective Olefin Metathesis Using Ruthenium Catalysts

Olefin metathesis is a prevailing method for the construction of organic molecules. Recent advancements in olefin metathesis have focused on stereoselective transformations. Ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts have had a particularly pronounced impact in the area of stereoselective olefin metathesis. The development of three categories of Z-selective olefin metathesis catalysts has made Z-ole...

Reducing Them Down To Charge Them Up: Low Temperature Catalyst Activation

The largest industrial application of olefin metathesis today is the synthesis of propylene from ethylene and butenes employing WO3 on SiO2, a relatively long-lived and regenerable catalyst that operates at 350–400 °C. It is widely proposed that high temperatures are required because the percentage of metal sites actually involved in the metathesis reaction is extremely low, or the reaction tha...

Nature of WOx Sites on SiO2 and Their Molecular Structure− Reactivity/Selectivity Relationships for Propylene Metathesis

Supported WOx/SiO2 catalysts were investigated for propylene metathesis as a function of tungsten oxide loading and temperature. The catalysts were synthesized by incipient-wetness impregnation of an aqueous ammonium metatungstate solution onto the silica support and calcined at elevated temperatures to form the supported tungsten oxide phase. In situ Raman spectroscopy under dehydrated conditi...
