چکیده

Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 81(6): 977-985 (1988) ABSTRACT The organization of the tympanic nerve within the thoracic ganglia of Heliothis zea (Boddie) was investigated. Cobalt chloride infiltration of cut axons was used to investigate the central terminations of the tympanic nerves. The axonal terminals of the A2 acoustic cell were confined to the meso-metathoracic ganglia, whereas the Al acoustic and the nonacoustic B cell were found in the thoracic ganglia. The relevance of this organization for neural circuitry of evasive flight behavior to acoustic stimulation is discussed.

Studies of the Neural Basis of Evasive Flight Behavior In Response to Acoustic Stimulation in Heliothis zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): Motoneuronal Innervation of Flight Muscles

The organization of the motoneurons that control the indirect flight muscles of the foreand hindwings was investigated in the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie). Cut axons of the nerves supplying the dorsolongitudinal and dorsoventral muscles were infiltrated with cobalt chloride. The cell bodies of the labeled motoneurons are located throughout all thoracic ganglia. Their respective dendriti...

Shelby: Induction of Tobacco Budworm Antimicrobial Peptides 921 INDUCTION OF ANTIMICROBIAL PEPTIDES IN INFECTED TISSUES OF LARVAL HELIOTHIS VIRESCENS (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE)

Effective biological control of destructive heliothine larvae via application of microbial entomopathogens or parasitoids is limited by a robust immune response against infection and parasitization. To better understand the immune response of budworms against microbial entomopathogens, several orthologs of antibacterial response proteins were identified and extracted from a tobacco budworm, Hel...

Attraction of Heliothis belladonna (Henry and Edwards) to the Sex Pheromone of the Corn Earworm Moth, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Several males of Heliothis belladonna (Henry and Edwards) were initially captured in traps baited with commercial pheromone lures for the corn earworm moth, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). Significant numbers of H. belladonna moths were subsequently captured in traps baited with a 4-component blend of corn earworm pheromone composed of Z-11-hexadecenal, Z-9-hexadecenal, Z-7-hexadecenal, and hexadecen...

Susceptibility of Helicoverpa zea and Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to Vip3A insecticidal protein expressed in VipCot™ cotton.

Susceptibility of laboratory and field colonies of Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) and Heliothis virescens F. to Vip3A insecticidal protein was studied in diet incorporation and diet overlay assays from 2004 to 2008. Responses of field populations were compared to paired responses of University of Arkansas laboratory susceptible H. zea (LabZA) and H. virescens (LabVR) colonies. After 7d of exposure, o...

Further Description of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Male Genitalia and New Genetic Evidence of Synonymy With Respect to the Anomalous Form, “Heliothis stombleri”

The Helicoverpa/Heliothis complex can cause serious damage to agricultural crops. Phenotypic similarity makes it difficult to discriminate between closely related Helicoverpa species. Currently, morphology of the male genitalia complemented with molecular techniques constitutes the best approach for species identification. In this work, a broad microscopic examination of adult Helicoverpa zea (...
