Appropriate Methods of Diagnosing Mineral Deficiencies
نویسنده
چکیده
Many minerals have been proven in research studies to be essential for optimal growth, physiologic function, and productivity in ruminants. Historically, testing for these minerals has been performed on diets and/or dietary components to ensure adequate concentrations of specific minerals in the diet. However, general mineral analysis does not identify the chemical forms of the minerals, which can dramatically alter their bioavailability and utilization.

Diagnosing Trace Mineral Deficiencies and Excesses in Transition Dairy Cows
Trace minerals are required for essentially all biochemical processes in the body. Many of these minerals are necessary for optimal growth, physiologic function, and productivity in animals. This paper focuses on 8 trace minerals: cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iodine (I), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn). These trace minerals have been chosen because nutritio...

The older senior is at high risk for osteoporosis. It is important for healthcare providers to be fully aware of the potential risks and benefits of diagnosing and treating osteoporosis in the older senior population. Data indicate that bone mineral density testing is under-utilized and drug therapy is often not initiated when indicated in this population. Bone mineral density testing with cent...
متن کاملReport of a Meeting
In the past decade substantial data have become availabbe suggesting that marginal malnutrition, including subclinical vitamin and mineral deficiencies, can affect some vital functions such as physical work capacity, immunobiobogicab competence, and cognitive functions and behavior. It was felt, therefore, that it would be appropriate to convene a meeting ofinvestigators involved in the study o...
متن کاملNutrition and heart failure: impact of drug therapies and management strategies.
Nutrition impairment commonly occurs in patients with heart failure and affects disease progression. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are associated with early mortality, particularly in patients classified as cachectic. Guideline-based therapies approved for heart failure, such as loop diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers, aldosterone antagonist...
متن کاملLead toxicity and nutritional deficiencies.
Under appropriate conditions, deficiencies of certain minerals and vitamins as well as high intakes of dietary fat increase the toxicity of a given dose of lead in experimental animals. The severity of lead poisoning can also be increased by the consumption of either deficient or excessive levels of protein. Mineral deficiencies appear to have some of the most profound effects on lead toxicity,...
