Extending Evolutionary Accounts of Religion beyond the Mind: Religions as Adaptive Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current cognitive approaches to religion maintain that religion evolved as a byproduct of cognitive mechanisms that were naturally selected for functions unrelated to religion. In the present chapter we argue that it is necessary to widen the scope of analyses to encompass religious concepts, behavior, and sharedness, and how they interact with each other and with the environment. This approach offers a more dynamic evolutionary explanation of religion that is not only able to account for a greater number of recent findings, but is also more plausible amidst competing theories. We discuss some of the strengths and weaknesses of the leading evolutionary explanations of religion and show that there are both promising avenues of research which lie ahead, as well as important steps in evaluating, integrating, and extending such accounts. Testing major evolutionary hypotheses about religion with a random sample.
Theories of religion that are supported with selected examples can be criticized for selection bias. This paper evaluates major evolutionary hypotheses about religion with a random sample of 35 religions drawn from a 16-volume encyclopedia of world religions. The results are supportive of the group-level adaptation hypothesis developed in Darwin's Cathedral: Evolution, Religion, and the Nature ...

Many challenges confront evolutionary scholars of religion. The origins and adaptive value of religion and the conditions that selected for its evolution are difficult to discern. Patterns of religious behavior, like other areas of human social behavior, have undergone significant change over our evolutionary history. Evans-Pritchard1 argued that dramatic historical changes in religious behavio...

Psychoanalysts since Sigmund Freud have tried to discuss the role of religion in modern societies. Freud himself saw religion as an illusion which had struck neurotics, while Slavoj Žižek viewed it as some sort of “perversion” which functioned in the cycle of law-transgression. In this essay, I dig into these theories to uncover traces of Lutheran interpretations of Paul’s words on the Jewish l...

Introduction There is a sense in which all intellectual work on religion has a reifying effect. Scholars in the humanities and social sciences necessarily construct religions as particular kinds of object. That is, they take some human emotions, ideas, artefacts and activities and frame them as things called „religions‟. Accounts of these religions provide the basis for inferring something call...
متن کاملEvolutionary Perspectives on Religion: An Overview and Synthesis
Religion is a cultural universal that has puzzled evolutionists since Darwin. The moral, social, emotional, and explanatory components that make up complex religious systems offer both evolutionary benefits and costs. Evolutionists who propose functional accounts of religion argue that it offers adaptive benefits that outweigh the costs. Theorists who propose nonfunctional accounts view religio...
