چکیده
Introduction There is consistent evidence that consumption of tomatoes and tomato products may reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer, especially advanced and aggressive prostate cancer [1]. Even after diagnosis of prostate cancer, consumption of tomatoes and tomato products may reduce the risk of prostate cancer recurrence, progression and death [2]. The protective effects of tomatoes and tomato products are thought to be due to its high lycopene content. However, the relationship between lycopene supplementation and prostate cancer risk remain inconclusive [3].

Increases in plasma lycopene concentration after consumption of tomatoes cooked with olive oil.
Lycopene is the main carotenoid in tomatoes and it has been hypothesised to be responsible for reducing the risk of some cancers and heart disease. The cooking of tomatoes with olive oil is a characteristic combination in the Southern Mediterranean diet. Previous studies have shown that the absorption of lycopene is greater from processed tomatoes than fresh tomatoes, since the processing break...
متن کاملDiallel Analysis for Lycopene Content in the Hybrids Derived from Different Colored Parents in Tomato
Lycopene is a red pigment in tomato with purported antioxidant properties. As the amount of lycopene has been reported to differ in different colored tomatoes or even absent in non-red tomatoes, the objective of this study was to investigate the inheritance of lycopene content and the color parameters of hybrids using a 10 parent diallel excluding reciprocals. Parents differed in general combin...
متن کاملOn the biosynthetic relationship between lycopene and colorless polyenes in tomatoes.
The suggestion of Zechmeister (1) that phytofluene might be a precursor of lycopene has been expanded by Porter and Lincoln (2), who proposed on the basis of experiments with tomatoes that a successive dehydrogenation of more saturated polyenes’ leads to the biosynthesis of lycopene and other carotenoids. This sequence would involve the intermediary formation of tetrahydrophytoene, phytoene, ph...
متن کاملThe effect of delactosed whey permeate on phytochemical content of canned tomatoes.
The effect of delactosed whey permeate (DWP) treatment on antioxidant and phyto-chemical components of canned Irish plum tomatoes were investigated. Tomatoes were sterilised for 5 min (F(0)) at 120 °C and stored for 6 months. The DWP treatment retained significantly (p<0.05) higher levels of ascorbic acid and lycopene of tomatoes. The antioxidant activity of DWP treated tomatoes was higher (7%)...
متن کاملHigh-Lycopene Tomato Intake Increases Serum Carotenoid Levels but not Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Healthy Adults
Fresh tomatoes higher in lycopene content than standard varieties have recently been designed. We hypothesized that consumption of fresh, high lycopene tomatoes (HEC) for 3-weeks, as compared to standard fresh tomatoes, (LEC) would result in significant increases in serum lycopene and reductions in oxidative stress and inflammation. Forty healthy adult men (37.5%) and women (62.5%) age 55.3±4.7...
