چکیده
Microfluidics is the science and technology of systems that process or manipulate small amounts (microto picoliters) of fluids, using channels with dimensions of tens to hundreds of micrometers (Whitesides, 2006). Microfluidics offers several advantages in a variety of fields including fuel cells (Dyer, 2002; Jankowski et al., 2002; Erdler et al., 2006; Nguyen et al., 2006; Morse, 2007; Kuriyama et al., 2008; Kjeang et al., 2009), forensics (Verpoorte, 2002), clinical diagnostics (Figeys et al., 2000; Mitchell, 2001; Verpoorte, 2002; Andersson et al., 2003; Verpoorte et al., 2003; Chung et al., 2007), biotechnology (Craighead, 2006), and drug discovery (Weigl et al., 2003; Dittrich and Manz, 2006). An insight into the origin, the present, and the future of this exciting field has been presented by Whitesides (2006). Other excellent reviews are those by Verpoorte et al. (2003), Gravesen et al. (1993), Reyes et al. (2002), Auroux et al. (2002), Dittrich et al. (2006), and Vilkner et al. (2004). The physics and scaling laws in fluidics have been detailed by Beebe et al. (2002), Hu et al. (2007), Janasek et al. (2006), Mijatovic et al. (2005), and Stone et al. (2004). A treatise on the different CONTENTS

Fabrication of freestanding, microperforated membranes and their applications in microfluidics.
This manuscript describes a convenient method for the fabrication of freestanding, microperforated membranes in photocurable polymers using only one step of photolithography. We used photosensitive prepolymers to make the membranes and photolithography to define the micropatterns. We demonstrated the fabrication of single- and multilayer microperforated membranes in SU-8 photoresist and Norland...
متن کاملSU-8 Photolithography as a Toolbox for Carbon MEMS
The use of SU-8 as precursor for glass-like carbon, or glassy carbon, is presented here. SU-8 carbonizes when subject to high temperature under inert atmosphere. Although epoxy-based precursors can be patterned in a variety of ways, photolithography is chosen due to its resolution and reproducibility. Here, a number of improvements to traditional photolithography are introduced to increase the ...
متن کاملA simple bonding process of SU-8 to glass to seal a microfluidic device
This paper describes a simple process of adhesive bonding between a glass lid and a SU-8 microfluidic device. The bonding is made by applying pressure, between 1.24 MPa – 3.72 MPa, and heat above the SU-8 glass transition temperature (Tg). The advantages of this process are low cost, simplicity and no need of extra adhesive material, which could block microchannels and inlets. The SU-8 microcha...
متن کاملSU-8 free-standing microfluidic probes
We present a process for fabrication of free-standing SU-8 probes, with a dry, mechanical release of the final micro-devices. The process utilizes the thermal release tape, a commonly used cleanroom material, for facile heat-release from the sacrificial layer. For characterization of the SU-8 microfluidic probes, two liquid interfaces were designed: a disposable interface with integrated wells ...
متن کاملSimple Multi-level Microchannel Fabrication by Pseudo-Grayscale Backside Diffused Light Lithography.
Photolithography of multi-level channel features in microfluidics is laborious and/or costly. Grayscale photolithography is mostly used with positive photoresists and conventional front side exposure, but the grayscale masks needed are generally costly and positive photoresists are not commonly used in microfluidic rapid prototyping. Here we introduce a simple and inexpensive alternative that u...
