Compositionality, Hierarchy and Recursion in Language A Case Study in Fluid Construction Grammar

چکیده
concepts like ‘circle’ or ‘blue object’ are not yet defined at this stage, they have to be learned. The inventory of concepts an agent eventually learns is called the agent’s ontology. 12 CHAPTER 2. THE LANGUAGE GAME FRAMEWORK topic should best be used for describing it. For example, if it is the only red object in the context then a good description probably should include this fact. This is called conceptualization. The result of conceptualization is a semantic description which, in our case, will always be a conjunction of first order logic predicates. A semantic description is the basic meaning that needs to be verbalized. How this is done will be explained later.

A Design Pattern For Phrasal Constructions
This chapter has two objectives. It discusses a design pattern for phrasal constructions and introduces the templates that can be used to instantiate this pattern in Fluid Construction Grammar, using as illustration nominal phrases such as “the green mouse” or “this mouse of mine”. Phrasal constructions not only build phrases but also combine the meanings contributed by their constituents and p...
متن کاملEmbodied Construction Grammar Approach to Compositionality and Conceptual Representation
The objective of this paper is to bring us a little bit closer to a general Neuro -Cognitive Theory of Cognition in Language and Thought that can account for the mechanics of language understanding, studied by the models of AI or connectionism, and the biology, explained by neurology and psychobiology. Embodied Construction Grammar (Bergen et al. 2001) provides a formalism to show conceptual re...
متن کاملComparing Two Grammar-Based Generation Algorithms: A Case Study
In this paper we compare two grammar-based generation algorithms: the Semantic-Head-Driven Generation Algorithm (SHDGA), and the Essential Arguments Algorithm (EAA). Both algorithms have successfully addressed several outstanding problems in grammarbased generation, including dealing with non-monotonic compositionality of representation, left-recursion, deadlock-prone rules, and nondeterminism....
متن کاملThe Emergence of Compositionality, Hierarchy and Recursion in Peer-to-peer Interactions
It is argued that compositionality, hierarchy and recursion, generally acknowledged to be universal features of human languages, can be explained as being emergent properties of the complex dynamics governing the establishment and evolution of a language in a population of language users, mainly on an intra-generational time scale, rather than being the result of a genetic selection process lea...
متن کاملComputational Simulation on the Coevolution of Compositionality and Regularity
Compositionality and regularity are universals in human languages; in most languages, complex expressions are determined by their structures and their components’ meanings. Based on a multi-agent computational model, the coevolution of compositionality and one type of regularity, word order, is traced during the emergence of compositional language out of holistic signals. The model modifies som...
