Vortex behaviour of an unbaffled surface aerator

چکیده
Agitating liquids in an unbaffled surface aeration tank leads to the formation of a vortex in the region of the impeller shaft. The types and characteristics of the vortex govern the process phenomena of a surface aeration tank. In the present work, experimental results and empirical correlations have been obtained to relate the vortex depth to a number of physical factors. Experiments have been carried out on geometrically similar surface aeration systems, so that the present results can be simulated in the field conditions. The critical speed at which the vortex reaches the impeller has been estimated. It is found that around critical speed, there is an observable change in mass transfer characteristics, power used for mixing, and radius of the forced vortex zone. Equations for predicting vortex depth in geometrically similar surface aeration tanks have also been developed.

متن کاملVariability of Energy Dissipation and Shear Rate with Geometry in Unbaffled Surface Aerator
The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy () and shear rate (γ) are the key process parameters for mixing in surface aerators. At constant dynamic variables (rotational speed), both and γ are greatly affected by the geometric parameters (impeller diameter, cross-sectional area of the tank, liquid height, rotor blade length and immersion height). By doing numerical computation by VISIM...
متن کاملMass transfer and shear rate in baffled surface aerator
−The scale up or scale down of the process variables in a surface aerator requires information about the shear rate prevailing in the system. In fact, the performance of surface aerator depends upon the shear rate. Shear rate affects the mass transfer operation needed by the surface aerator. Theoretical analysis of shear rate suggests a nonlinear behavior with rotational speed of the impeller, ...
