Glycobiology of Leishmania donovani.
Leishmania donovani, the causative organism of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the deadliest of the entire known Leishmania species. This protozoan parasite displays immense adaptability to survive under extremely harsh conditions. Cell surface glycoconjugates play a pivotal role in parasite virulence and infectivity. This review mainly highlights on the importance of these molecules and ...
متن کاملLinking In Vitro and In Vivo Survival of Clinical Leishmania donovani Strains
BACKGROUND Leishmania donovani is an intracellular protozoan parasite that causes a lethal systemic disease, visceral leishmaniasis (VL), and is transmitted between mammalian hosts by phlebotomine sandflies. Leishmania expertly survives in these 'hostile' environments with a unique redox system protecting against oxidative damage, and host manipulation skills suppressing oxidative outbursts of ...
متن کاملInhibition of CD1 expression in human dendritic cells during intracellular infection with Leishmania donovani.
Dendritic cells can initiate antimicrobial responses by CD1-mediated presentation of pathogen-derived glycolipids. We show that the protozoan Leishmania donovani inhibits CD1 expression and prevents activation of CD1-restricted T cells by dendritic cells. Evasion of presentation by CD1 may represent a Leishmania survival strategy to avoid recognition of abundant parasite glycolipids.
متن کاملCharacterization of the gene encoding glyoxalase II from Leishmania donovani: a potential target for anti-parasite drugs.
The glyoxalase system is a ubiquitous detoxification pathway that protects against cellular damage caused by highly reactive oxoaldehydes such as methylglyoxal which is mainly formed as a by-product of glycolysis. The gene encoding GLOII (glyoxalase II) has been cloned from Leishmania donovani, a protozoan parasite that causes visceral leishmaniasis. DNA sequence analysis revealed an ORF (open ...
