Planar Variational Multi-Scale Modeling

چکیده
The variational multi-scale (VMS) method for large-eddy simulation (LES) is a promising new approach that employs variational projection to achieve a priori scale separation in lieu of traditional spatial filtering. However, depending on the numerical method used, VMS may not be practicable in all spatial directions. We apply the VMS methodology to a numerical method that does not support explicit scale separation in the wall-normal direction for turbulent channel flow. Similar to the common LES practice of filtering only in the planes, variational projection is performed only in the planes and this strategy is found to be as successful as the full VMS method. Our findings make VMS available to a wide range of turbulence simulation tools.

In this paper, a mathematical modeling is developed for plastic analysis of planar frames. To this end, the researcher tried to design an optimization model in linear format in order to solve large scale samples. The computational result of CPU time requirement is shown for different samples to prove efficiency of this method for large scale models. The fundamental concept of this model is ob...
متن کاملA Variational Multiscale Method with Multifractal Subgrid-scale Modeling for Large-eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flow
A variational multiscale method with multifractal subgrid-scale modeling is proposed for large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow. In the multifractal subgrid-scale modeling approach, the subgrid-scale velocity is evaluated from a multifractal description of the subgrid-scale vorticity, which is based on the multifractal scale similarity of gradient fields in turbulent flow. The multifractal sub...

A multi-scale cohesive numerical framework is proposed to simulate the failure of heterogeneous adhesively bonded systems. This multi-scale scheme is based on Hill’s variational principle of energy equivalence between the higher and lower level scales. It provides an easy way to obtain accurate homogenized macroscopic properties while capturing the physics of failure processes at the micro-scal...
متن کاملMonitoring Unresolved Scales in Multiscale Turbulence Modeling
This paper extends the two-level Variational MultiScale (VMS) method for Large-Eddy Simulation, introduced by Hughes et al. [Comput. Visual. Sci., 3:47–59 (2000)], to a threelevel approach that clarifies the role of unresolved scales of motion on the resolved scales. It is shown that the multi-scale framework does not obviate modeling on the large-scales, but that VMS allows for different model...
متن کاملMultiscale Modeling of Planar and Nanowire Field-Effect Biosensors
Field-effect nano-biosensors (or Biofets, biologically sensitive field-effect transistors) have recently been demonstrated experimentally and have thus gained interest as a technology for direct, label-free, real-time, and highly sensitive detection of biomolecules. The experiments have not been accompanied by a quantitative understanding of the underlying detection mechanism. The modeling of f...
