Mass Balance on Water and Dry Solids from Pilot-scale Landfill Bioreactor Studies

چکیده

Pilot-scale experiments simulating bio-active landfilling conditions were conducted to evaluate the effects of operating conditions on the kinetics and overall quantities of methane production from anaerobic digestion of real municipal solid waste. Several modalities of leachate injection and pretreatment operations of the waste were studied using six Landfill Simulation Reactors, which were incubated at 35°C for more than a year. In a first stage, a detailed characterization of the waste at the initial state was carried out and several methods were compared to estimate the biogas and methane potential. Then, mass balance calculations on water and dry solids were established considering leachate inputs and outputs and biogas production, and compared to the actual differences of masses of water and dry solids in the reactors between the beginning and the end of the experiments.

Bioreactor landfills : Do they work ?

This paper begins by providing an outline of various waste stabilisation techniques on which the concept of bioreactor or process-based landfills is based, followed by an overview of the research and development of this alternative landfill approach. The paper then presents a summary of the Australian experience. It also reports on the current state of bioreactor landfills and discusses the dif...

A pilot scheme in ireland is treating agricultural wastewater using waste alum sludge from water - treatment

alum sludge is the main residual by-product from drinking-water-treatment processes including coagulation, flocculation, clarification and filtration, followed by dewatering in plants using aluminium salt as a coagulant. It is the most widely generated water-treatment residual worldwide – and is mostly sent to landfill being perceived as a waste of little known reuse value. In Ireland, an annua...

Modeling energy consumption in membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment in north Africa.

Two pilot-scale membrane bioreactors were operated alongside a full-sized activated sludge plant in Tunisia in order to compare specific energy demand and treated water quality. Energy consumption rates were measured for the complete membrane bioreactor systems and for their different components. Specific energy demand was measured for the systems and compared with the activated sludge plant, w...

Study on Operational Conditions to Minimize Membrane Fouling in Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) System for Wastewater Treatment-Preliminary Pilot Tests

In this study, effect of antiscalant usage on minimizing of membrane fouling due to high water hardness during wastewater treatment tests run by a pilot-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) system. The membranes used in these studies were Kubota flat sheet MBR membranes made from polyethylene with a pore size of 0.4 micrometer. Preliminary tests were carried out with tap water...

A Study on Membrane Bioreactor for Water Reuse from the Effluent of Industrial Town Wastewater Treatment Plant

Background: Considering the toxic effects of heavy metals and microbial pathogens in industrial wastewaters, it is necessary to treat metal and microbial contaminated wastewater prior to disposal in the environment. The purpose of this study is to assess the removal of heavy metals pollution and microbial contamination from a mixture of municipal and industrial wastewater using membrane biorea...
