چکیده

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a multipurpose and commercial crop of Pakistan. Sugar for food remains the most important product of sugarcane, by-products of the crop, many of them from fiber, are a significant part of its economic production. Sucrose serves as the major form of carbohydrate storage in sugarcane. Metabolism of sucrose, a mobile source of energy and carbon, is an absolute requirement for the survival of heterotrophic plant organs. In these organs, different isoforms of invertase with discrete subcellular locations hydrolyze the disaccharide into hexoses and thereby, feed sucrose into various biochemical pathways. Different invertase isoforms exist in the vacuole, cytoplasm and apoplasm of plant cells. The acid isoforms, having activity optima at pH 4.5-5.5, are present in the vacuole and apoplast. The isoforms with activity optima near neutral pH and alkaline isoforms with activity optima at pH 8.0 are in the cytoplasm. In storage sinks, invertase activity is proposed to be important for creating a sucrose concentration gradient from the phloem to sink tissue and then maintaing the storage sink for promoting phloem unloading. Since sugarcane is the prime source of sugar production in Pakistan, it is imperative to investigate the physiological and biochemical basis of yield reduction under various abiotic stresses.

MicroRNAs and Their Regulatory Role in Sugarcane

Sugarcane, one of the most photosynthetically efficient crops, is an important source of sugar and feedstock for green energy and co-generation. The high level of polyploidy and genomic peculiarities in this crop point towards a complex mechanism of regulation for the economically important traits like sugar content, cane yield related traits, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses etc. The ...

Kinetic Modelling of Sucrose Metabolism: a Powerful Predictive Tool for Genetic Manipulation of Sugar Content in Sugarcane

The apparent failure to make significant progress in increasing the sucrose content of commercial varieties during the past two decades has led to the speculation that a yield plateau has been reached. Several research groups have therefore been investigating genetic manipulation of sucrose metabolism as an alternative approach, to supplement conventional breeding. However, the general lack of ...

Paper 1.pmd

Sugarcane is one of the most important field crops grown in the tropics and sub-tropics. Conventional and biotechnological research inputs have contributed in solving some of the constraints limiting crop productivity. However, limitations such as complex genome, narrow genetic base, poor fertility, susceptibility to biotic and abiotic stresses and long duration to breed elite cultivars, hinder...

A Novel Stress-Induced Sugarcane Gene Confers Tolerance to Drought, Salt and Oxidative Stress in Transgenic Tobacco Plants

BACKGROUND Drought is a major abiotic stress that affects crop productivity worldwide. Sugarcane can withstand periods of water scarcity during the final stage of culm maturation, during which sucrose accumulation occurs. Meanwhile, prolonged periods of drought can cause severe plant losses. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS In a previous study, we evaluated the transcriptome of drought-stressed...

The choice of reference genes for assessing gene expression in sugarcane under salinity and drought stresses

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids) is a world-wide cash crop for sugar and biofuel in tropical and subtropical regions and suffers serious losses in cane yield and sugar content under salinity and drought stresses. Although real-time quantitative PCR has a numerous advantage in the expression quantification of stress-related genes for the elaboration of the corresponding molecular mechanism in ...
