van Langenberg DR, Yelland GW, et al. Cognitive impairment in Crohn’s disease is associated with systemic inflammation, symptom burden and sleep disturbance. United European Gastroenterology Journal 2017; 5(4):579587. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease may suffer from cognitive dysfunction in addition to symptoms of diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Common complaints include impaired concentration and clouding of thought and they usually affect Crohns patients. A cross-sectional observational study has been conducted in order to measure cognitive impairment in Crohns patients compared to healthy controls. In this study, 49 Crohns clinic patients and 31 healthy control patients were asked to complete surveys including clinical, demographic, psychiatric, fatigue and sleep parameters. In addition, disease activity has been assessed for each Crohns patient using serum CRP, faecal calprotectin, HarveyBradshaw Index. A computer based test, The Subtle Cognitive Impairment Test (SCIT-RT) has been performed with the primary measure of response time and compared between both groups. Furthermore, multiple linear regression analyses incorporating all variables assessed for factors associated with slower SCIT-RT, indicating cognitive impairment (1). Crohns patients had higher depression scores and poorer sleep quality compared with healthy controls. Response times (SCIT-RT) were significantly slower in Crohns patients compared to healthy control group. The slowed response times were significantly correlated with clinical indices of inflammation including the Harvey-Bradshaw Index and serum CRP. This confirms a strong link between Crohns disease related congnitive impairment and systemic inflammation. However, there was an inverse correlation between intestinal mucosal inflammation and SCIT-RT as indicated by inverse correlation of faecal calprotectin and cognitive function. Poorer sleep quality remains strongly associated with cognitive dysfunction. Furthermore, this study reinforces that Crohns disease is a multisystemic condition with wide range of signs and symptoms (1).

Effects of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) including most important forms; Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC); are chronic diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract with unclear etiology and pathology. The role of gut microbiota has recently been considered as major a factor, since altered microbiome or "dysbiosis" is a key player in the protracted course of inflammation in IBD. Howeve...
متن کاملApplication of extracellular vesicles in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease
Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is caused by genetic, environmental, microbial and immune factors. IBD has two primary forms: Ulcerative colitis and Crohn´s disease. The incidence of IBD has significantly increased over the last few decades. Given that patients have poor response to drug treatments or are resistant to drug therapies, new therapies are needed for gastrointestinal i...
متن کاملThe Study of Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Background and aims: In diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease, one of diagnostic way is upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, which helps in differential diagnosis of unspecified colitis as well. The aim of this study was to investigate the necessity of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional...
متن کاملComparison of Coping Strategies in People with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Healthy People in Terms of Health Locus of Control
Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of disorders that cause chronic inflammation (pain and swelling) in the intestines. IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Both types affect the digestive system. The study aims to compare coping strategies in people with inflammatory bowel disease and healthy people, according to internal and external sources of health contr...
متن کاملRecent advances in pathobiology and histopathological diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease
In order to make a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease (CD) which belongs to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it is important to evaluate pathologic material in conjunction with clinical, laboratory and endoscopic findings. There are several exceptions to the classical principles of IBD that may lead to diagnostic confusion. UC and CD have a variety of characteristic but al...
متن کاملRecent Advances: The Imbalance of Cytokines in the Pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Cytokines play an important role in the immunopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, where they drive and regulate multiple aspects of intestinal inflammation. The imbalance between proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines that occurs in IBD results in disease progression and tissue damage and limits the resolution of inflammat...
