Safety and Social Aspects of Intelligent Vehicle-highway Systems

The use of road tra c as an accepted means of transportation has some unacceptable consequences in the resulting loss of life and damage to the environment. A proposed solution has involved the signi cant employment of digital computers in vehicles and in tra c equipment, collectively known as Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (or IVHS), and these are overviewed. The paper discusses the problems introduced by this new technology and describes the work of a European funded project which has examined some of the problems. The European group have produced a set of proposals for a standard which is concerned with European certi cation and development of IVHS, and these proposals are summarised.
