چکیده
Observations of interstellar gas and dust towards nearby stars and within the solar system show that the Sun is embedded in a warm diffuse partiallyionized cloud. This cloud is the leading edge of a flow of interstellar matter (ISM) through our Galactic neighborhood. Interstellar matter sets the boundary conditions of the heliosphere and astrospheres of extra-solar planetary systems. Moreover, the interplanetary regions in these systems are sensitive to inflowing ISM.

The formation of supermassive black holes (SMBH) is intimately related to galaxy formation, although precisely how remains a mystery. I speculate that formation of, and feedback from, SMBH may alleviate problems that have arisen in our understanding of the cores of dark halos of galaxies.

We review the current knowledge and understanding of the interstellar medium of our galaxy. We first present each of the three basic constituents – ordinary matter, cosmic rays, and magnetic fields – of the interstellar medium, laying emphasis on their physical and chemical properties inferred from a broad range of observations. We then position the different interstellar constituents, both wit...

We report 60 and 90 µm observations of 7 millisecond pulsars with the ISOPHOT instrument and describe our analysis procedures. No pulsars were detected, and typical (3σ) upper limits are 150 mJy. We combine our results with others in the literature and use them to place constraints on the existence of protoplanetary or dust disks around millisecond pulsars.

I summarize Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of interstellar O vi absorption towards 12 early-type stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the closest disk galaxy to the Milky Way. LMC O vi is seen towards all 12 stars with properties (average column densities, kinematics) very similar to those of the Milky Way halo, even though O/H in the LMC is lower by a factor o...

The local interstellar spectrum of cosmic ray electrons is derived by correcting the data from balloon and space measurements for the solar modulation effect. The resulting spectrum, after the renormalization of some experimental data set, can be fitted with a single power law from about 3 GeV to 2 TeV with spectral index γ = 3.42± 0.02. On the other hand, at low energies the measurements by CA...
