Reconciling Bayesian and Frequentist Evidence in the One-Sided Testing Problem

چکیده
For the one-sided hypothesis testing problem it is shown that it is possible to reconcile Bayesian evidence against H0, expressed in terms of the posterior probability that Ho is true, with frequentist evidence against H0, expressed in terms of the p value. In fact, for many classes of prior distributions it is shown that the infimum of the Bayesian posterior probability of Ho is equal to the p value; in other cases the infimum is less than the p value. The results are in contrast o recent work of Berger and Sellke (1987) in the two-sided (point null) case, where it was found that the p value is much smaller than the Bayesian infimum. Some comments on the point null problem are also given.

Reconciling Bayesian and Frequentist
For the one-sided hypothesis testing problem it is shown that it is possible to reconcile Bayesian evidence against HO' expressed in terms of the posterior probability that HO is true, with frequentist evidence against HO' expressed in terms of the p-value. In fact, for many classes of prior distributions it is shown that the infimum of the Bayesian posterior probability of HO is either equal t...
متن کاملComparison between Frequentist Test and Bayesian Test to Variance Normal in the Presence of Nuisance Parameter: One-sided and Two-sided Hypothesis
This article is concerned with the comparison P-value and Bayesian measure for the variance of Normal distribution with mean as nuisance paramete. Firstly, the P-value of null hypothesis is compared with the posterior probability when we used a fixed prior distribution and the sample size increases. In second stage the P-value is compared with the lower bound of posterior probability when the ...
متن کاملTesting Normal Means: The Reconcilability of the P Value and the Bayesian Evidence
The problem of reconciling the frequentist and Bayesian evidence in testing statistical hypotheses has been extensively studied in the literature. Most of the existing work considers cases without the nuisance parameters which is not the frequently encountered situation since the presence of the nuisance parameters is very common in practice. In this paper, we consider the reconcilability of th...
متن کاملA mixed Bayesian/Frequentist approach in sample size determination problem for clinical trials
In this paper we introduce a stochastic optimization method based ona mixed Bayesian/frequentist approach to a sample size determinationproblem in a clinical trial. The data are assumed to come from a nor-mal distribution for which both the mean and the variance are unknown. In contrast to the usual Bayesian decision theoretic methodology, whichassumes a single decision maker, our method recogni...
متن کاملReconciling Bayesian and Frequentist Tests: the Imprecise Counterpart
Imprecise Dirichlet Process-based tests (IDP-tests, for short) have been recently introduced in the literature. They overcome the problem of deciding how to select a single prior in Bayesian hypothesis testing, in the absence of prior information. They make use of a “near-ignorance” model, that behaves a priori as a vacuous model for some basic inferences, but it provides non-vacuous posterior ...
