چکیده
This article analyzes compact laterally coupled distributed feedback DFB lasers with three defect regions. These devices are more flexible and smaller than conventional DFB lasers, having typical lengths between 20 and 50 m and a width less than 1 m lateral gratings are inserted in a single-mode waveguide . We optimize the defect regions to achieve an improved performance. In other words, an adequate choice of phase shifts may lead to single-mode operation, lower threshold optical power, higher quantum differential efficiency, and more uniform field distribution. This device is designed to operate under optical pumping. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2800285

Organic semiconductor lasers with two-dimensional distributed feedback
Photograph of a mechanically flexible 2D-DFB laser made from the conjugated polymer MeLPPP. The laser is optically pumped well above the threshold for amplified spontaneous emission. The complex far-field emission pattern (blue-green) results from a large detuning between the resonance wavelength and the gain maximum. • A nearly diffraction limited surface emitting conjugated polymer laser util...
متن کاملWidely tunable distributed-feedback lasers with chirped gratings
A quasicontinuous tuning range of 65 nm at 3.2 m was obtained for continuous wave, single-longitudinal-mode operation at 77 K of an optically pumped distributed-feedback laser with a chirped grating. Interferometric lithography with spherical wavefronts was used to fabricate a large-area chirped grating whose period varied continuously in the direction of the grating lines. Tuning was achieved ...
متن کاملCoherent coupling of two-dimensional arrays of defect cavities in photonic crystal vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers
An approach for creating two-dimensional arrays of coherently coupled vertically emitting laser cavities is demonstrated. This is achieved by creating a 232 array of defect cavities within the top distributed Bragg reflector of a photonic crystal vertical cavity surface-emitting laser. The optical coupling occurs laterally through coupling regions defined between the defect cavities. Modifying ...
متن کاملOptically In-Well-Pumped Semiconductor Disk Laser With Low Quantum Defect
An in-well pumped InGaAs disk laser emitting at 984 nm is presented. The device is designed to eliminate major loss mechanisms attributed to heat generation in semiconductor disk lasers. An output power of close to 7W at room temperature is achieved by optical excitation with a fiber-coupled 940 nm diode laser. Strong cooling or the use of heat spreaders with high thermal conductivity is not ne...
متن کاملRoom-temperature optically-pumped InGaSb quantum well lasers monolithically grown on Si(100) substrate
Room-temperature optically-pumped In0.2Ga0.8Sb quantum well lasers on Si are reported. The defect-free monolithic epistructure growth on a Si(100) substrate is initiated by an AlSb quantum dot nucleation layer followed by an AlSb=GaSb superlattice. The 13% mismatch between the AlSb and Si lattice is accommodated by misfit dislocations and associated crystallographic undulations in the AlSb buff...
