Energy Efficient Optical Networks with Minimized Non-Renewable Power Consumption

چکیده
Recent studies have shown that the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry is responsible for about 2% of the global emission of CO2 and this percentage is expected to increase as the internet expands in bandwidth and reach. In this paper we propose a hybrid-power IP over WDM network where renewable energy is used to reduce the CO2 emission of IP overWDM networks. ALinear Programming (LP) model and a novel heuristic are developed to minimize the non-renewable power consumption in the “hybrid-power” IP over WDM network. The performance of the network is studied considering two topologies, the NSFNET and the USNET. Compared with routing in the electronic layer, the results show that routing in the optical layer coupled with using renewable energy significantly reduces the CO2 emissions of the IP over WDM network by up to 73% for the NSFNET and 69% for the USNET, and the proposed heuristic has little impact on the QoS. We also develop an LP model to identify the impact of the location of nodes employing renewable energy on the non-renewable power consumption of the network. The results show that the optimum location of nodes employing renewable energy is determined according to the output power of the renewable energy sources and the power consumption of the nodes.

Energy Minimized design of Mixed Line Rate IP-over-WDM Network
Power consumption in IP-over-WDM networks has become a major concern, more so due to rapidly evolving data intensive applications. Increasing power consumption also increases the environmental cost (carbon emission). Carbon emissions are the result of power generation using non-renewable (traditional hydrocarbons) energy resources. Usage of non-renewable energy resources (such as hydrocarbons, ...
متن کاملUse of Renewable Resources in Wireless Communication Networks
Energy consumption has always a noticeable impact on the environment. Fast growing world population, increasing prosperity and the hunger for fuel that has developed a consequence, have led to a rapid rise in the need for energy, so to fulfill that need we require renewable resources. The non-conventional or alternative energy resources are not amenable to depletion even with irrational levels ...

The aim of this study was to compare energy consumption in dairy farms with different sizes. Sources of energy include non renewable sources such as fossil fuel, and electricity and renewable sources such as forage, concentrate, machinery, labor, and water. The required data were collected from 42 dairy farms in Tehran province, Iran and were analyzed to assess energy consumption based on diffe...
متن کاملA Survey of Green Base Stations in Cellular Networks
The growing awareness towards energy efficient cellular networks has paved way for new technologies in designing green cellular networks. According to technical analysts, the base stations are the most energy intensive part of a typical cellular network. Saving power in base stations is therefore the primary focus in green cellular networks. The main goal of designing green base stations is for...
متن کاملInvestigating the effect of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption on social welfare in developing Asian countries: Quantile regression approach
Energy as one of the factors of production along with labor and capital has an important role in development and social welfare. Due to the pollution of non-renewable resources and its negative impact on welfare, the use of renewable resources can improve social welfare by eliminating pollutants. In this study, the effect of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption on social welfare of de...
