Diagram Interaction During Intelligent Tutoring in Geometry: Support for Knowledge Retention and Deep Understanding

چکیده
Prior research has shown that skilled problem solvers often use features of visual representations to cue relevant knowledge, but little is known about how to support learners in developing connections between visual and verbal knowledge components. In this research, we investigated two methods to support focus on key visual features during problem solving in an intelligent tutor: 1) student interaction with diagrams during problem solving, and 2) student explanations that connected diagram features to geometry rules at each problem-solving step. Research was conducted in 10 grade classrooms using an experimental version of the Geometry Cognitive Tutor. Interaction with diagrams promoted long-term retention of problem-solving skills and supported deep understanding of geometry rules, as evidenced by items testing transfer and visual-verbal knowledge integration. Diagram-rule explanations did not significantly influence learning. Findings suggest that student focus on relevant visual information should be carefully integrated into problem-solving practice to support robust learning.

Diagram Interaction during Intelligent Tutoring in Geometry: Support for Knowledge Retention and Deep Transfer
Prior research has shown that skilled problem solvers often demonstrate meaningful links between relevant visual and verbal knowledge components, but little is known about how to support novice learners in connecting visual and verbal information during learning or whether such support will improve learning outcomes. This work explored two methods to support meaningful connections between visua...
متن کاملLearning during Intelligent Tutoring: When Do Integrated Visual-Verbal Representations Improve Student Outcomes?
Research has shown that integration of visual and verbal information sources during learning promotes successful student outcomes. However, it is unclear whether it is better to provide students with integrated visual-verbal representations, or to require them to build such integrated representations themselves. In a classroom study, three conditions were used to explore the impact of integrate...
متن کاملIntegrating Visual and Verbal Knowledge During Classroom Learning with Computer Tutors
Prior research in multimedia learning has demonstrated that materials that present visual and verbal information in an integrated, rather than split-source, format can support successful learning outcomes. These benefits often are attributed to reductions in cognitive load during learning; however, linking visual and verbal sources in materials also may support cognitive processes that coordina...
متن کاملEvaluation of Automatic Conversion of Text to Diagram
Text to diagram conversion is an emerging area of research towards automating solution of natural language scientific problems, developing intelligent tutoring tools and many other graphics-based applications. There are no standard tools for evaluating diagrams produced from textual description. This paper presents application of an algorithmic approach to evaluate geometry diagrams produced fr...
متن کاملLimitations of Student Control: Do Students Know When They Need Help?
Intelligent tutoring systems often emphasize learner control: They let the students decide when and how to use the system's intelligent and unintelligent help facilities. This means that students must judge when help is needed and which form of help is appropriate. Data about students’ use of the help facilities of the PACT Geometry Tutor, a cognitive tutor for high school geometry, suggest tha...
