چکیده

This paper explores the relationship between physical and cyber infrastructures, focusing on how threats and disruptions in physical infrastructures can cascade into failures in the cyber infrastructure. It also examines the challenges involved in organizing and managing massive amounts of critical infrastructure data that are geographically and logically disparate. To address these challenges, we have designed Cascade, a system for visualizing the cascading effects of physical infrastructure failures into the cyber infrastructure. Cascade provides situational awareness and shows how threats to physical infrastructures such as power, transportation and communications can affect the networked enterprises comprising the cyber infrastructure. Our approach applies the concept of punctualization from Actor-Network Theory as an organizing principle for disparate infrastructure data. In particular, the approach exposes the critical relationships between physical and cyber infrastructures, and enables infrastructure data to be depicted visually to maximize comprehension during disaster planning and crisis response

Policy Based Management for Critical Infrastructure Protection

Our current societies are fully dependent on large complex critical infrastructures (LCCIs). These LCCIs are large scale distributed systems that are highly interdependent, both physically and in their greater reliance on the information infrastructure, which logically introduce vulnerabilities. Failures, accidents, physical or cyber attacks can provoke major damages which can proliferate by ca...

Cascading Effects of Common-Cause F on ailures Critical Infrastructures

One of the most challenging problems in Critical Infrastructure Protection is the assessment and mitigation of cascading failures across infrastructures. In previous research we have proposed a method for assessing the cumulative security risk of cascading threats due to multi-order dependencies between infrastructures. However, recent empirical studies indicate that common mode failures may re...

ICT and Electric Power Systems Interdependencies Modeling

Power systems and ICTs interdependencies request innovative and revolutionary methods, built on new ideas that aim at identifying weaknesses and critical components that can fail and create many other failures either by cascading, common-mode or escalating. One possible approach to understand critical infrastructures vulnerabilities is to study their topologies and to quantify their physical an...

Investigating SCADA Failures in Interdependent Critical Infrastructure Systems

this paper is based on the initial ideas of a research proposal which will investigate SCADA failures in physical infrastructure systems. The results will be used to develop a new notation to help risk assessment using dependable computing concepts. SCADA systems are widely used within critical infrastructures to perform system controls and deliver services to linked and dependent systems. Fail...

Performance, Robustness, and Cyber Security of Critical Infrastructure Systems – A Cyber-Physical Systems Research Theme

Critical infrastructures are complex physical and cyber-based systems that form the lifeline of modern society, and their reliable and secure operation is of paramount importance to national security and economic vitality. The US President’s Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection (CCIP) [1] has identified telecommunications, electric power systems, natural gas and oil, banking and fin...
