The Structure and Function of Xylem in Seed- Free Vascular Plants: An Evolutionary Perspective

چکیده

The evolution of xylem was critical to the success of embryophytic land plants. According to the fossil record, the earliest terrestrial autotrophs were algae followed by bryophytes, simple organisms that lacked the ability to effi ciently transport water (Raven 1984 ; Sperry 2003 ; Taylor et al. 2009 ; Pittermann 2010 ). Like their ancestors, today’s non-vascular plants have essentially two options for survival: inhabit perennially wet substrates such as stream sides or exploit poikilohydry, the capacity to recover from near complete desiccation (Niklas 2000 ; Proctor and Tuba 2002 ; Sperry 2003 ). In the absence of xylem, non-vascular plants are subject to the vagaries of

Verification of an Evolutionary-based Wavelet Neural Network Model for Nonlinear Function Approximation

Nonlinear function approximation is one of the most important tasks in system analysis and identification. Several models have been presented to achieve an accurate approximation on nonlinear mathematics functions. However, the majority of the models are specific to certain problems and systems. In this paper, an evolutionary-based wavelet neural network model is proposed for structure definiti...

Energy Flow from Root to Shoot: A Comprehensive In silico Analysis

Background: Root to shoot connection and transfer of information seems to be taken place mostly via the transmissions of signal molecules, secondary metabolites, amino acids, hormones and proteins, through xylem sap. Examination of earlier reports is indicative of relatively high levels of conservation in xylem sap protein compositions. Apparently these protein molecules are be...

Xylem Structure and Function

The earliest land plants were short, herbaceous plants that evolved from primitive, water-living ancestors. For these plants, the change from a predominantly aquatic to a terrestrial environment was accompanied by the need for additional structural support to keep the plants upright and the need for more efficient transport of water to the aboveground parts of the plants. Larger plant sizes als...

Hydraulic trade-offs and space filling enable better predictions of vascular structure and function in plants.

Plant vascular networks are central to botanical form, function, and diversity. Here, we develop a theory for plant network scaling that is based on optimal space filling by the vascular system along with trade-offs between hydraulic safety and efficiency. Including these evolutionary drivers leads to predictions for sap flow, the taper of the radii of xylem conduits from trunk to terminal twig...
