Preface NEGATIVE DESERVING : BLAME

چکیده
Blaming—and avoiding blame—are basic social motivations. These two motivations operate in every area of life: family, friendship, school, work, politics. Experimental analysis of these two classes of motivation offers fruitful opportunities for social attitude theory, developmental psychology, motivation theory, and person science. Opportunities to improve the social-moral level of society have exceptional importance. Blame exhibits algebraic law: Blame = Responsibility + Consequences. Consequences represents the outcome of some action, Responsibility the responsibility of the blamee. This averaging law for blame was first found by Leon (1976, 1977, 1980) and Surber (1977, 1985) with children. This law showed that basic claims of Piaget’s theory were incorrect. More important, this law went further to show that young children have far higher cognitive capabilities than had previously been recognized. In addition, this law demonstrated a simple, powerful method for further analysis (Chapter 5). The basic blame law discovered with children has been replicated and extended in extensive studies with adults. These blame laws provide new methods for studying these important function of personality. Responsibility and Consequences are both usually integrals of multiple determinants that require deeper analysis. Many variables deserve study: extenuation, apology, restitution, and personal relationships, as well as associated processes of excuses and counterblaming. Developing science of blame thus depends on capabilities with integration of multiple variables. The algebraic laws of blame reviewed in this chapter are a step in this direction (Note 0).

Compatibilism and Incompatibilism in Social Cognition.
Compatibilism is the view that determinism is compatible with acting freely and being morally responsible. Incompatibilism is the opposite view. It is often claimed that compatibilism or incompatibilism is a natural part of ordinary social cognition. That is, it is often claimed that patterns in our everyday social judgments reveal an implicit commitment to either compatibilism or incompatibili...
متن کاملFrom Moral Blame to Moral Wrongness
[I must apologize for the fact that this paper is very late, very rough, incomplete, and nearly devoid of citations. As a result, I recognize that I am deserving of the very attitude of moral blame that is the central theme of this paper. An unintended benefit of this situation is that the reader is likely to have this attitude in mind while reading the paper, and will thus be in a better posit...
متن کاملAttributions of Responsibility and Blame for Procrastination Behavior
The present study examined the relationship between procrastination, delay, blameworthiness, and moral responsibility. Undergraduate students (N = 240) were provided two scenarios in which the reason for inaction (procrastination, delay), the target (self, other), and the outcome (positive, negative) were manipulated, and students were asked to rate the moral responsibility and blameworthiness ...
متن کاملPreface DESERVING THEORY
Deserving, including equity and fairness, lies at the heart of social–moral cognition. The deserving schema—your deserts should be proportional to your deserving—is age-old. The idea of an algebraic model of proportionality goes back to Aristotle and was much discussed in the latter half of the 20 century in terms of equity theory. But to judge proportionality we must be able to measure how muc...
متن کاملFrustrated wants and entitlements: fundamental components of CRNA job satisfaction.
A comparative study was conducted examining CRNA feelings of deprivation or resentment as they relate to their job satisfaction. Deprivation is described in Faye Crosby's Theory of Relative Deprivation (1976), which posits that six psychological preconditions (wanting, comparison other, deserving, past expectations, future expectations, and lack of self-blame) have an impact on individual perce...
