چکیده

Over the years, multigrid has been demonstrated as an efficient technique for solving inviscid flow problems. However, for viscous flows, convergence rates often degrade. This is generally due to the required use of stretched meshes (i.e., the aspect ratio AR = ∆y/∆x << 1) in order to capture the boundary layer near the body. Usual techniques for generating a sequence of grids that produce proper convergence rates on isotropic meshes are not adequate for stretched meshes. This work focuses on the solution of Laplace’s equation, discretized through a Galerkin finite-element formulation on unstructured stretched triangular meshes. A coarsening strategy is proposed and results are discussed.

Multigrid Strategies for Viscous Flow Solvers on Anisotropic Unstructured Meshes

Unstructured multigrid techniques for relieving the stiffness associated with high-Reynolds number viscous flow simulations on extremely stretched grids are investigated. One approach consists of employing a semi-coarsening or directional-coarsening technique, based on the directions of strong coupling within the mesh, in order to construct more optimal coarse grid levels. An alternate approach...

Automatic coarsening of three dimensional anisotropic unstructured meshes for multigrid applications

This paper describes an algorithm designed for the automatic coarsening of three-dimensional unstructured simplicial meshes. This algorithm can handle very anisotropic meshes like the ones typically used to capture the boundary layers in CFD with Low Reynolds turbulence modeling that can have aspect ratio as high as 10. It is based on the concept of mesh generation governed by metrics and on th...

Multigrid Methods for Anisotropic Edge Refinement

A nite element method with optimal convergence on non-smooth three dimensional domains requires anisotropic mesh reenement towards the edges. Multigrid methods for anisotropic tensor product meshes are available and are based either on line (or plane) smoothers or on semi-coarsening strategies. In this paper we suggest and analyze a new multigrid scheme combining semi-coarsening and line smooth...

Directional Agglomeration Multigrid Techniques for High-Reynolds Number Viscous Flows

A preconditioned directional-implicit agglomeration algorithm is developed for solving twoand three-dimensional viscous flows on highly anisotropic unstructured meshes of mixed-element types. The multigrid smoother consists of a pre-conditioned pointor line-implicit solver which operates on lines constructed in the unstructured mesh using a weighted graph algorithm. Directional coarsening or ag...
