BLR sizes and the X-ray spectrum in AGN

چکیده

Recent ROSAT studies of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies revealed these objects (with FWHM Hβ ≤ 2000 km s−1) generally show steeper soft X-ray spectra than broad line Seyfert 1’s and that there are noAGNwith broad lines and steep X-ray spectra. We derive a simple theoretical model which explains this observed correlation between the line width and the spectral index for Seyfert 1 galaxies. Assuming the line width is due to gravitational velocity dispersion, it is determined by the radius of the broad line region. Sources with steep X-ray spectra (for a given luminosity) have a stronger ionizing power than flat-spectrum sources with comparable luminosity, which implies that the BLR is formed at relatively larger distances from the central source, and hence has a smaller velocity dispersion and a smaller observed FWHM.We test the model over a hetrogeneous (normal and narrow-line) sample of some 50 AGN finding a good agreement with the data.

X-ray Variability and Spectral Scaling: a Measure of Blr Sizes in Agn

We developed a new method of determination of the size of the broad emission-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei. This method relates the radius of the broad-line region of AGN to the soft X-ray luminosity and spectral index. Comparing the BLR distances calculated from our model to the BLR distances determined by reverberation mapping shows that our scaling law agrees with the R ∼ L1/2 ...

Unabsorbed Seyfert 2 galaxies : the case of “ naked ” AGN ⋆

Hawkins (2004) reported on a class of “naked” AGN characterized by strong amplitude optical brightness variability and the complete absence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum. The variability suggests that the nucleus is seen directly, however the absence of broad lines contradicts the simple formulation of Unified Models for AGN. We present the results of quasi-simultaneous spectr...

1ES 1927+654: Persistent and rapid X-ray variability in an AGN with low intrinsic neutral X-ray absorption and narrow optical emission lines

We present X-ray and optical observations of the X-ray bright AGN 1ES 1927+654. The X-ray observations obtained with ROSAT and Chandra reveal persistent, rapid and large scale variations, as well as steep 0.1-2.4 keV (Γ = 2.6±0.3) and 0.3-7.0 keV (Γ = 2.7±0.2) spectra. The measured intrinsic neutral X-ray column density is approximately 7·10 cm. The X-ray timing properties indicate that the str...

Detection of Faint BLR Components in the Starburst/Seyfert Galaxy NGC 6221 and Measure of the Central BH Mass

In the last decade, using single epoch virial based techniques in the optical band, it has been possible to measure the central black hole mass on large type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) samples. However, these measurements use the width of the broad line region (BLR) as a proxy of the virial velocities and are therefore difficult to be carried out on those obscured (type 2) or low luminosity...

Unification Issues and the AGN Torus

Observations give strong support for the unification scheme of active galactic nuclei. Clumpiness of the toroidal obscuration is crucial for explaining the IR observations and has significance consequences for AGN classification: type 1 and type 2 viewing is an angle-dependent probability, not an absolute property. The broad line region (BLR) and the dusty torus are, respectively, the inner and...
