Fronts from complex two-dimensional dispersal kernels: Theory and application to Reid’s paradox

چکیده
Bimodal dispersal probability distributions with characteristic distances differing by several orders of magnitude have been derived and favorably compared to observations by Nathan et al. Nature London 418, 409 2002 . For such bimodal kernels, we show that two-dimensional molecular dynamics computer simulations are unable to yield accurate front speeds. Analytically, the usual continuous-space random walks CSRWs are applied to two dimensions. We also introduce discrete-space random walks and use them to check the CSRW results because of the inefficiency of the numerical simulations . The physical results reported are shown to predict front speeds high enough to possibly explain Reid’s paradox of rapid tree migration. We also show that, for a time-ordered evolution equation, fronts are always slower in two dimensions than in one dimension and that this difference is important both for unimodal and for bimodal kernels. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. Speed of travelling fronts: Two-dimensional and ballistic dispersal probability distributions
– The speed of traveling fronts for a two-dimensional model of a delayed reactiondispersal process is derived analytically and from simulations of molecular dynamics. We show that the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) versions of a given kernel do not yield always the same speed. It is also shown that the speeds of time-delayed fronts may be higher than those predicted by the corres...
متن کاملThe Paradox of Intervening in Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
This commentary addresses two points raised by Kitson and colleagues’ article. First, increasing interest in applying the Complexity Theory lens in healthcare needs further systematic work to create some commonality between concepts used. Second, our need to adopt a better understanding of how these systems organise so we can change the systems overall behaviour, creates a paradox. We seek to m...
متن کاملFronts from two-dimensional dispersal kernels: Beyond the nonoverlapping-generations model.
Most integrodifference models of biological invasions are based on the nonoverlapping-generations approximation. However, the effect of multiple reproduction events (overlapping generations) on the front speed can be very important (especially for species with a long life spam). Only in one-dimensional space has this approximation been relaxed previously, although almost all biological invasion...
متن کاملMultiscale Analysis of Active Seed Dispersal Contributes to Resolving Reid's Paradox
"Reid's paradox" is the mismatch between theoretical estimates of invasion rates for plants and "observed" rates of plant migration, particularly in the Holocene postglacial migration northwards. While Reid couched his paradox in terms of the migration of oaks in Great Britain, observers have documented the same problem in a wide variety of species. In almost all cases, these authors suggest th...
متن کاملReid's paradox revisited: the evolution of dispersal kernels during range expansion.
Current approaches to modeling range advance assume that the distribution describing dispersal distances in the population (the "dispersal kernel") is a static entity. We argue here that dispersal kernels are in fact highly dynamic during periods of range advance because density effects and spatial assortment by dispersal ability ("spatial selection") drive the evolution of increased dispersal ...
