Aggressive competition between males , female - controlled polygyny and sexual monomorphism in a Malagasy primate

چکیده
The evolutionary determinants of sexual dimorphism among primates continue to be debated. This paper uses field observations ofa Malagasy primate, Propithecus uerreauxi, to argue that one problem underlying this debate is the unrecognized heterogeneity of mating system categories used in comparative analyses investigating the importance of sexual selection in determining sexual dimorphism. It is suggested that at least one new mating system category warrants recognition, that offemale-controlled polygyny, with predictions for sexual dimorphism that are in contrast to those ofmale-controlled polygyny.

Evolutionary aspects of aggression the importance of sexual selection.
Aggressive behaviors in animals, for example, threat, attack, and defense, are commonly related to competition over resources, competition over mating opportunities, or fights for survival. In this chapter, we focus on aggressive competition over mating opportunities, since this competition explains much of the distribution of weaponry and large body size, but also because this type of competit...
متن کاملConflict over multiple-partner mating between males and females of the polygynandrous common lizards.
The optimal number of mate partners for females rarely coincides with that for males, leading to a potential sexual conflict over multiple-partner mating. This suggests that the population sex ratio may affect multiple-partner mating and thus multiple paternity. We investigate the relationship between multiple paternity and the population sex ratio in the polygynandrous common lizard (Lacerta v...
متن کاملFemale dominance and feeding priority in a prosimian primate: experimental manipulation of feeding competition.
Female dominance and feeding priority are considered unique behavioral strategies in many Malagasy lemuriformes, particularly Lemur catta. Two hypotheses have been introduced to explain these behavior patterns: 1) females are agonistically dominant over males to mitigate female-male food competition so that females can compensate for high energy demands and inefficient reproductive physiology, ...
متن کاملPolygyny affects paternal care, but not survival, pair stability, and group tenure in a cooperative cichlid
It is generally assumed that there is sexual conflict over the mating system. In this view, polygyny benefits males at a cost to females, and it is hence unclear why females accept polygynous mating. However, in the facultatively polygynous fish, Neolamprologus pulcher, no costs of polygyny to females have thus far been detected. We hypothesized that the costs of polygyny remained undetected be...
متن کاملSexual Selection: Male-Male Competition
Aggression. Offensive action, particularly in regard to defending resources. Aggression in defending females and other resources should be favored by selection when there are fewer resources than competitors and when an individual can boost fitness by forcibly removing another individual. Intersexual Selection. Sexual selection due to interactions between the sexes. Mate choice by males or fema...
