Cramer-Rao bounds for estimating range, velocity, and direction with an active array

چکیده
We derive Cramér–Rao bound (CRB) expressions for the range (time delay), velocity (Doppler shift), and direction of a point target using an active radar or sonar array. First, general CRB expressions are derived for a narrowband signal and array model and a space-time separable noise model that allows both spatial and temporal correlation. We discuss the relationship between the CRB and ambiguity function for this model. Then, we specialize our CRB results to the case of temporally white noise and the practically important signal shape of a linear frequency modulated (chirp) pulse sequence. We compute the CRB for a three-dimensional (3-D) array with isotropic sensors in spatially white noise and show that it is a function of the array geometry only through the “moments of inertia” of the array. The volume of the confidence region for the target’s location is proposed as a measure of accuracy. For this measure, we show that the highest (and lowest) target location accuracy is achieved if the target lies along one of the principal axes of inertia of the array. Finally, we compare the location accuracies of several array geometries.

This paper proceeds directions of arrival (DOA) estimation by a linear array. These years, some algorithms, e.g. Khatri-Rao approach, Nested array, Dynamic array have been proposed for estimating more DOAs than sensors. These algorithms can merely estimate uncorrelated sources. For Khatri-Rao approach, this is due to the fact that Khatri-Rao product discard the non-diagonal entries of the corre...
متن کاملReduction of CRB in Arbitrary Pre-designed Arrays Using Alter an Element Position
Simultaneous estimation of range and angle of close emitters usually requires a multidimensional search. This paper offers an algorithm to improve the position of an element of any array designed on the basis of some certain or random rules. In the proposed method one element moves on its original direction, i.e., keeping the vertical distance to each source, to reach the constellation with les...

This paper deals with Direction of Arrival (DOA) Estimation using Uniform linear array (ULA) for the case of more sources than sensors in the array processing. Khatri-Rao subspace approach, introduced for DOA estimation for this, in non-stationary signal model. The technique will be shown to be capable to handle stationary signals, too. Identifiability conditions of this approach are addressed....

We present maximum likelihood (ML) methods for active estimation of range (time delay), velocity (Doppler shift), and direction of a point target with a radar array in spatially correlated noise with unknown covariance. We consider structured and unstructured array response models and compute the Cram er-Rao bound (CRB) for the time delay, Doppler shift, and direction of arrival. We derive ambi...
متن کاملBounds and Algorithm for Direction Nding of Phase Modulated Signals
In many cases where direction nding is of interest, the signals impinging on an antenna array are known to be phase modulated, hence to have a constant mod-ulus (CM). This is a strong property, by itself already suucient for source separation, and can be used to construct improved direction nding algorithms. We rst present the relevant Cramer-Rao bounds for arbitrary array conngurations, and ar...
