چکیده

BY DEFINITION, a validated supercentenarian is a properly documented centenarian who has lived to be at least the age of 110 years. The tables reproduced below and various other tables of supercentenarians are regularly updated by Dr. Stephen Coles, one of the members of our Editorial Board, along with other members of the Los Angeles Gerontology Research Group (GRG). For further details, please contact them through their website at http://www.grg.org/. During 2009, we will publish six different tables and graphs from the GRG’s data, following the sequence published in Rejuvenation Research in 20071–4 and 2008.5–10 Accordingly, in this issue we give the latest list of living supercentenarians and the list of those who died in the past year. As of January 20, 2009, there were 89 living supercentenarians on our list (82 females and 7 males); 54 died in 2008, and 6 in 2009.

Learning From Leaders: Life-span Trends in Olympians and Supercentenarians

Life-span trends progression has worldwide practical implications as it may affect the sustainability of modern societies. We aimed to describe the secular life-span trends of populations with a propensity to live longer-Olympians and supercentenarians-under two hypotheses: an ongoing life-span extension versus a biologic "probabilistic barrier" limiting further progression. In a study of life-...

Month of birth and survival to age 105+: evidence from the age validation study of German semi-supercentenarians.

Using data from Germany, we examine if month of birth influences survival up to age 105. Since age reporting at the highest ages is notoriously unreliable we draw on age-validated information from a huge age validation project of 1487 alleged German semi-supercentenarians aged 105+. We use month of birth as an exogenous indicator for seasonal changes in the environment around the time of birth....

Life at the extreme limit: phenotypic characteristics of supercentenarians in Okinawa.

BACKGROUND As elite representatives of the rapidly increasing "oldest-old" population, centenarians have become an important model population for understanding human aging. However, as we are beginning to understand more about this important phenotype, another demographic group of even more elite survivors is emerging-so-called "supercentenarians" or those who survive 110-plus years. Little is ...

Supercentenarians: the oldest people in the world.

Epidemiologists are now interested in supercentenarians. They are the subjects who had reached 110 years of age, in a validated manner. Information on their nationality, date of birth, the gender, and the year of eventual death is known. To evaluate the prevalence of supercentenarians is a complicated task. It is correlated with the same conditions which determine the ageing of the population, a...

Inflammation, But Not Telomere Length, Predicts Successful Ageing at Extreme Old Age: A Longitudinal Study of Semi-supercentenarians

To determine the most important drivers of successful ageing at extreme old age, we combined community-based prospective cohorts: Tokyo Oldest Old Survey on Total Health (TOOTH), Tokyo Centenarians Study (TCS) and Japanese Semi-Supercentenarians Study (JSS) comprising 1554 individuals including 684 centenarians and (semi-)supercentenarians, 167 pairs of centenarian offspring and spouses, and 53...
