Enhancement of thermospheric mass density by soft electron precipitation
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] Enhancements in F-region electron density and temperature and bottomside Pedersen conductivity caused by soft electron precipitation are shown to enhance the Joule heating per unit mass and the mass density of the thermosphere at F-region altitudes. The results are derived from the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere model (CMIT) including two types of causally specified soft electron precipitation—direct-entry cusp precipitation and Alfvén-wave induced, broadband electron precipitation —the effects of which are self-consistently included for the first time in a coupled global simulation model. The simulation results provide a causal explanation of CHAMP satellite measurements of statistical enhancements in thermospheric mass density at 400 km altitudes in the cusp and premidnight auroral region. Investigation of energy transport and thermospheric upwelling during quiet magnetospheric and ionospheric conditions from the studies of low- and middle-altitude cusp
We investigate energy fluxes and small, kilometrescale Birkeland currents in the magnetospheric cusp at a 1– 3 Earth radii altitude and in the ionosphere using satellites when they were, according to the Tsyganenko model, in magnetic conjunction within 50–60 km and up to 15 min apart. We use Cluster and CHAMP satellites, and study three conjunction events that occurred in 2008 and 2009, when th...

We present in a statistical study a comparison of thermospheric mass density enhancements (ρrel) with electron temperature (Te), small-scale field-aligned currents (SSFACs), and vertical ion velocity (Vz) at high latitudes around noon magnetic local time (MLT). متن کاملCorrelation between Poynting flux and soft electron precipitation in the dayside polar cap boundary regions
Observations have revealed large Poynting flux and soft electron precipitation around the cusp region, which have strong impacts on the polar ionosphere/thermosphere. Simulations also confirmed that Poynting flux and soft electron precipitation significantly change the neutral density and dynamics around the dayside polar cap boundary regions. However, no detailed study has been conducted to sh...
متن کاملThermospheric Neutral Wind at –39° Azimuth During the Daytime Sector at Sondrestrom
Measurements with the Sondrestrom radar have been used to examine the daytime thermospheric neutral wind and to relate that wind to other geophysical parameters. Ion drag is found to be particularly important for determining the wind pattern. However, evidence is presented that the wind pattern is significantly influenced by soft particle precipitation and, possibly, by Joule heating.

[1] SO/N2 ratios in the Earth’s thermosphere are measured by the Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) on the TIMED satellite, and demonstrate strong 9 and 7 day oscillations in 2005 and 2006, respectively, that are well correlated with the solar wind speed and Kp index. This work builds on the recently discovered connection between rotating solar coronal holes and thermospheric mass density variati...
