Feasibility of laser-trapped membrane mirrors in space
نویسنده
چکیده
As proposed in 1979 1 , standing waves of polychromatic laser light can trap atoms, molecules or larger particles to provide a free-standing reflective optical surface. Such mirrors must be fabricated in space and may in principle reach sizes beyond 10m, using techniques related to optical tweezers and atom traps. Laboratory testing in vacuum tanks is becoming possible. Diode lasers having adequate tunability, lifetime and energetic efficiency became available. Possible designs are discussed.

An Analytical Model for Rare Earth Doped Fiber Lasers Consisting of High Reflectivity Mirrors
The present article is concerned with an analytical solution for some parts of rare earth doped fiber laser equations. The presented model is valid for both four and three-level fiber lasers consisting high reflectivity mirrors. A typical method to obtain initial value in the numerical solutions of fiber laser equations is shooting method, which is based on an iteration process. Whereas this st...
متن کاملMEMS Deformable Mirrors for Astronomical Adaptive Optics
We report on the development of high actuator count, micro-electromechanical (MEMS) deformable mirrors designed for high order wavefront correction in ground and space-based astronomical adaptive optics instruments. The design of these polysilicon, surface-micromachined MEMS deformable mirrors builds on technology that has been used extensively to correct for ocular aberrations in retinal imagi...

This study aims to investigate the potential of nanoparticle retention of ultrafi ltration (UF) multichannel hollow fiber membrane. Filtration experiments of fl uorescent silica nanoparticles (NPs) (10 and 100 nm) and CdTe quantum dots (1.5 nm) suspensions were carried out under diff erent operating conditions to analyze the retention rate (RT), the fouling zone and the...
متن کاملLaser Beam Shaping with Membrane Deformable Mirrors
The performance of laser machining systems can often be improved by adjusting the intensity profile of the beam on the target. Shaping a laser intensity profile can be efficiently accomplished by adjusting the spatial phase of the beam before propagating the beam a distance to the target. Beam shaping can be accomplished with passive diffractive elements, but this technique is only capable of c...
متن کاملNew concepts for Space-Based and Ground-Based Laser Weapons
Is the Department of Defense (DOD) pursuing the correct investment strategy for space-based laser weapons? Recent advances in lasers, optics, and spacecraft technologies may bring high-energy laser weapons to a sufficient level of maturity for serious consideration as space weapons against the theater ballistic missile threat. However, these technological advances also make other architectures ...
