چکیده

– This paper reviewed the technologies that enable Charge-Coupled Device based and CMOS photodiode based image sensors. The advantages and disadvantages of the two types of sensors were presented. It was concluded that in the near future, both types of sensors would continue to play a role in the imaging industry. High image quality applications would continue to demand ChargeCoupled Devices based imagers. Consumer applications that require many features and low power consumption will demand CMOS based imagers. Finally, it is believed that with the constant efforts in the industry to improve CMOS technologies, the performance of CMOS imagers will eventually equal that of their CCD counterparts, if not surpasses them.

CMOS Image Sensors for High Speed Applications

Recent advances in deep submicron CMOS technologies and improved pixel designs have enabled CMOS-based imagers to surpass charge-coupled devices (CCD) imaging technology for mainstream applications. The parallel outputs that CMOS imagers can offer, in addition to complete camera-on-a-chip solutions due to being fabricated in standard CMOS technologies, result in compelling advantages in speed a...

Low‐Temperature PureB CVD Technology for CMOS Compatible Photodetectors

In this chapter, a new technology for low‐temperature (LT, 400°C) boron deposition is developed, which provides a smooth, uniform, closed LT boron layer. This technolo‐ gy is successfully employed to create near‐ideal LT PureB (pure boron) diodes with low, deep junction‐like saturation currents, allowing full integration of LT PureB photodio‐ des with electronic interface circuits and other sen...

CCD vs. CMOS: Facts and Fiction

past five years of the potential for CMOS imagers and of the impending demise of the incumbent image-sensing technology, CCDs. Strong claims by the proponents of a resurgent CMOS technology have been countered by equally forceful claims by CCD defenders. In a pattern typical of battling technologies (both with significant merits but also lacking maturity in some regards), users have become leer...

A High Resolution CMOS Imager with Active Pixel using Capacitively Coupled Bipolar Operation

The active pixel sensor technology promises high performance than conventional CCD imagers. This paper reports a new high resolution CMOS imager with one transistor active pixel sensing based on capacitorcoupled bipolar action. The base capacitor is pulsed negatively for image integration and positively for image sensing. The pixel size is 5.9um x 5.9um (on 0.8um design rule). The prototype ima...
