Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Safety Considerations
نویسنده
چکیده
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is a technique in which a brief electrical current passes through a coil of wires, thereby generating a strong magnetic field that is perpendicular to the axis of the coil. The magnetic field can pass through tissues such as skin, muscle, and bone and extend into the brain. The rapidly rising and falling magnetic field generates a brief electrical discharge in the underlying tissues, including the brain. The brief, localized electrical discharge of brain tissue has the capacity to treat brain disorders such as aphasia, neglect and depression as well as to cause harmful side-effects. This brief manuscript focuses on the potential adverse effects of TMS.

متن کاملTranscranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Safety Considerations and Recommendations
Ensuring patient and participant safety during transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is of paramount importance. In this chapter, we begin by exploring a number of general safety concerns and the prevalence of reported side-effects in the TMS literature. Next, we outline contraindications and the recommended safety parameters for each of the major stimulation paradigms (including single and r...

متن کاملCombined use of transcranial magnetic stimulation and metal electrode implants: a theoretical assessment of safety considerations.
This paper provides a theoretical assessment of the safety considerations encountered in the simultaneous use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neurological interventions involving implanted metallic electrodes, such as electrocorticography. Metal implants are subject to magnetic forces due to fast alternating magnetic fields produced by the TMS coil. The question of whether the me...
