چکیده

Research into horizontal gene transfer (HGT) suggests that HGT is complex and certain pathways are likely to be more significant than others. The advent of GM plants has led to more research which has changed our perception of HGT. We argue that GM crops impact the probability of HGT. It is possible that the rate limiting steps in HGT can be significantly altered by transgenic technology. We also argue that GM crops may supply genes that may confer selective advantage on recipients of HGT.

Impacts of Transgenic Plants and Micro- Organisms on Soil Biota

Little is known about the impacts of transgenic plants and micro-organisms on soil biota and processes, despite the large number of field releases of transgenic crops. Recent work has shown that transgenic plants can cause changes in the soil biota (both invertebrates and micro-organisms) associated with these plants. Often the changes are transient but their impact on the soil ecosystem remain...

Risks from GMOs due to horizontal gene transfer.

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is the stable transfer of genetic material from one organism to another without reproduction or human intervention. Transfer occurs by the passage of donor genetic material across cellular boundaries, followed by heritable incorporation to the genome of the recipient organism. In addition to conjugation, transformation and transduction, other diverse mechanisms of...

Genetically modified organisms in the United States: implementation, concerns, and public perception.

We examine the state of biotechnology with respect to genetically modified (GM) organisms in agriculture. Our focus is on the USA, where there has been significant progress and implementation but where, to date, the matter has drawn little attention. GM organisms are the result of lateral gene transfers, the transfer of genes from one species to another, or sometimes, from one kingdom to anothe...

Horizontal gene transfer between bacteria.

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) refers to the acquisition of foreign genes by organisms. The occurrence of HGT among bacteria in the environment is assumed to have implications in the risk assessment of genetically modified bacteria which are released into the environment. First, introduced genetic sequences from a genetically modified bacterium could be transferred to indigenous micro-organisms...

GM Gene Flow (B) Horizontal gene transfer of viral inserts from GM plants to viruses

Introduction The use of GM plants containing viral inserts (as transgenes or promoters) raises the possibility that these inserts may lead to the creation of new viruses through recombination (HGT). Viruses commonly evolve by recombination and have been shown to recombine with transgenes which are derived from viruses in numerous laboratory-scale experiments (e.g. Greene and Allison 1994, 1996)...
